DreamWorks Animation to Cut 70 Jobs

DreamWorks Animation is currently in the midst of a strategic restructuring, involving a reduction of approximately 70 positions across various divisions, including corporate functions, feature film production, television, and technology departments. This workforce reduction is part of an overarching cost-reduction initiative, as confirmed by a spokesperson for DreamWorks Animation in a statement to Variety.

As part of their cost-cutting measures, DreamWorks Animation is making a significant shift in its production strategy. Traditionally known for producing films entirely in-house, the studio is now leaning more heavily on collaborations with third-party studios, as reported by Cartoon Brew. This shift not only reflects a financial strategy but also aligns with industry trends where studios increasingly explore partnerships to streamline costs and optimize resources.

Amid these changes, the animation studio has an eagerly anticipated project on the horizon. ‘Trolls Band Together’ is scheduled for release on November 17, promising a star-studded soundtrack that includes a highly anticipated reunion of the iconic boy band NSYNC, performing ‘Better Place’ for the third installment. The voice cast for this animated feature includes industry luminaries such as Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Camila Cabello, Eric André, Kid Cudi, Troye Sivan, Daveed Diggs, Amy Schumer, RuPaul, Kenan Thompson, and more.

Beyond this release, DreamWorks Animation continues to diversify its content portfolio. Earlier this year, the studio, in collaboration with Netflix, introduced ‘Orion and the Dark,’ an animated family comedy penned by renowned writer Charlie Kaufman. Based on Emma Yarlett’s 2014 book, the film, set for a 2024 release, marks the feature debut of animator Sean Charmatz. The narrative unfolds as a darkly whimsical tale, following a young boy named Alex Vanderhouven as he confronts his deepest fears.

In a separate development, Apple TV+ has joined forces with DreamWorks Animation for the production of a new animated series titled ‘Curses!,’ as reported exclusively by Variety in September. The show, co-executive produced by John Krasinski, centers around a family curse that turns Alex Vanderhouven to stone. The story follows Alex’s two children, Pandora and Russ, along with his wife Sky, as they embark on a quest to return stolen artifacts to their rightful homes, aiming to lift the curse that has plagued their family for generations.

While these creative endeavors showcase the studio’s commitment to delivering compelling content, the recent layoffs indicate a dynamic response to the evolving landscape of the animation industry. Cartoon Brew was the first to report on the recent workforce reductions at DreamWorks Animation, shedding light on the studio’s efforts to navigate challenges while continuing to innovate in the highly competitive animation market.
