DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing is not your typical tie-in game

Surprisingly, DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing offers an enjoyable experience, diverging from the typical tie-in game formula. Although it may not compete with classics like Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing, the game introduces unique mechanics and attention to detail that set it apart.

Unlike many tie-in games that often feel like cash grabs, DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing displays a genuine affection for its source material. Each kart is adorned with references to the corresponding movies, and the race tracks are charming recreations of memorable film locations, such as Far Far Away from Shrek 2 and Berk from How To Train Your Dragon.

The driving mechanics, a crucial aspect, deliver a mostly smooth experience, with satisfying drifting adding a strategic element. While the pace may feel slightly slower than other kart racers, the rush of speed is still present, especially when navigating inventive tracks featuring magic pathways and varied obstacles.

The game surprises with its unique features, like rainbow pathways reminiscent of F-Zero 99, offering a risk/reward system. The track designs showcase creativity, from avoiding dragon flames in a castle to bouncing through a trampoline room. Familiar sights and sounds from DreamWorks franchises enhance the overall spectacle, with a Rainbow Road-like track inspired by DreamWorks film intros standing out.

Despite the somewhat lackluster items, the game includes references to DreamWorks movies, contributing to its charm. Notably, DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing stands out with voice acting, featuring banter and witty exchanges between characters. While not reaching the level of polish seen in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, the game holds appeal for kids and DreamWorks Animation fans alike, leaving a desire for additional content like Rise of the Guardians DLC.
