‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ Marks Dreamworks’ Lowest Opening Ever

Universal-Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ has unfortunately entered the record books for the wrong reason. The film’s opening weekend brought in an estimated $5.2 million, marking the lowest-ever opening for a Dreamworks picture. Despite launching in 3,400 theaters, it yielded a meager $1,529 per screen, the worst among the top ten films. While the film received positive scores from audiences, including an A- Cinemascore and 68% positive from Posttrak polling, its box office performance is a disappointment.

Comparisons have been drawn to Disney-Pixar’s ‘Elemental,’ which had a similarly lackluster debut but showed signs of recovery in subsequent weeks. However, it’s important to note that ‘Elemental’ benefited from a substantial marketing campaign, a factor absent in ‘Ruby Gillman.’ The film’s unique qualities and enjoyable elements may be appreciated by those who discover it independently.

Unfortunately, the film’s underwhelming performance is likely to fuel speculations and critiques in mainstream entertainment media. The movie’s box office struggles are especially disheartening considering that ‘Ruby Gillman’ features Dreamworks’ first titular female lead. Despite this setback, it’s crucial for Universal executives not to misinterpret the audience’s disinterest in the film as a lack of interest in female-led productions.

Some suggest that the film’s focus on Ruby’s uncle rather than the teenage experiences and relationships may have contributed to its box office challenges. Alternatively, the studios could have targeted a more specific audience, particularly young women, to achieve better results. The upcoming ‘Barbie’ film, which confidently understands its target audience, is poised for success.

Despite ‘Ruby Gillman’s stumble, the animation genre continues to thrive at the U.S. box office. ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ secured the second spot in its fifth weekend, earning an estimated $11.5 million, bringing its total to an impressive $339.8 million domestically. Meanwhile, ‘Elemental,’ in third place, demonstrated a recovery with $11.3 million in its third weekend, reaching a domestic total of $88.7 million. Although ‘Elemental’ remains an underperformer for Disney, its trajectory mirrors that of ‘Lightyear,’ which incurred a $106 million loss for the company last year.
