Review: ‘Migration’ Marks Illumination’s Finest Work Since ‘Despicable Me

In Illumination’s latest film, ‘Migration,’ a family of mallards embarks on an adventurous journey to Jamaica, encountering comedic mishaps and forming new friendships along the way. With stunning CGI animation and a captivating storyline, ‘Migration’ showcases the studio’s creative prowess. Led by Mack Mallard (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) and his fearless wife Pam (voiced by Elizabeth Banks), the Mallard family sets out to explore life beyond their pond, despite Mack’s initial reservations. When they encounter migrating birds, including the charming Kim (voiced by Isabela Merced), who invites them to Jamaica, the Mallards reluctantly agree to join the journey. What follows is a series of hilarious escapades, from navigating through thunderstorms to evading a manic chef, all while discovering the true meaning of family and adventure.

Director Benjamin Renner’s visual storytelling brings the Mallards’ journey to life, capturing breathtaking landscapes and exhilarating flight sequences reminiscent of the acclaimed documentary ‘Winged Migration.’ Renner’s attention to detail is particularly evident in the film’s portrayal of New York City, with its towering skyscrapers and bustling streets. Additionally, the film’s antagonist, a menacing chef with a penchant for culinary delights, adds an element of suspense and excitement to the narrative.

Screenwriter Mike White’s witty dialogue and well-developed characters, particularly the mischievous Gwen Mallard, inject humor and heart into the story. Gwen’s antics, coupled with Mack and Pam’s endearing dynamic, create a compelling family dynamic that resonates with audiences of all ages. White’s inclusion of themes such as bravery, friendship, and the importance of staying true to oneself further enriches the film’s narrative.

While the film is preceded by a less-inspired short featuring the ubiquitous minions, ‘Migration’ itself stands as a testament to Illumination’s storytelling prowess. With its charming characters, captivating animation, and heartfelt message, ‘Migration’ is sure to delight audiences and solidify its place as one of Illumination’s finest films to date.

‘Migration’ is set to hit theaters on December 22nd, courtesy of Universal Pictures.
