Pixar’s ‘Soul,’ ‘Turning Red,’ and ‘Luca’ will debut in theaters in 2024 while continuing to stream on Disney+

In a notable move that combines nostalgia with contemporary strategy, Disney is set to release three Pixar films—’Soul,’ ‘Luca,’ and ‘Turning Red’—in theaters during 2024. Originally streamed on Disney+ amid the pandemic, these films will now enjoy special engagement theatrical runs. The decision is part of Disney’s historical tradition of re-releasing animated classics, a practice that proved immensely lucrative over the years, even extending into the DVD era. While each of the three films will receive moderate to wide theatrical releases, they will concurrently remain available on Disney+ during this newly extended theatrical window.

The orchestrated rollout begins with the Oscar-winning animated feature ‘Soul,’ scheduled to hit theaters on January 12. Following this, ‘Turning Red’ is slated for release on February 9, with ‘Luca’ concluding the sequence on March 22. Ticket sales for these screenings will commence on January 2. The press release emphasizes that Disney invites “moviegoers to experience three Pixar films the way they were meant to be seen.” This move taps into the ongoing trend of special movie events and aims to rekindle the magic of these Pixar creations on the big screen.

‘Soul’ initially faced an unusual release circumstance during Christmas 2020 due to the closure of theaters in major markets like New York City and Los Angeles. However, it went on to achieve significant success internationally, grossing over $121 million. Its re-release during the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend will compete with Paramount’s ‘Mean Girls,’ Legendary/Tri-Star’s ‘The Book of Clarence,’ and Amazon MGM’s ‘The Beekeeper.’

‘Turning Red,’ originally slated for a theatrical release on March 11, 2022, took a detour to Disney+ under the leadership of Disney CEO Bob Chapek. The decision led to a limited release overseas, grossing just over $20 million. Its re-entry into theaters on Feb. 9, 2024, will face competition from Focus Features’ ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ and Sony’s ‘Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us.’

‘Luca,’ also nominated for an animated feature Oscar, bypassed theaters in the summer of 2021, a decision attributed to the Chapek administration. However, it will make its theatrical debut in 2024, going head-to-head with Lionsgate’s ‘Arthur the King.’

Alongside these Pixar films, audiences will be treated to accompanying shorts—’Burrow’ preceding ‘Soul,’ ‘Kitbull’ accompanying ‘Turning Red,’ and the classic Pixar short ‘For the Birds’ following ‘Luca.’ This theatrical strategy sets the stage for the highly anticipated release of Disney/Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ on June 14, 2024, marking a pivotal moment for Pixar as it strives to navigate the evolving landscape of movie consumption and reignite interest in its cherished creations.
