In a recent interview with Forbes, Shinichiro Watanabe, the creator of the iconic anime series Cowboy Bebop, expressed his disappointment with the live-action adaptation produced by Netflix. According to Watanabe, the show “was clearly not Cowboy Bebop” and lacked the essence of the original series.
Watanabe was sent a video of the opening scene to review, but after watching it for a mere matter of minutes, he made up his mind about the show, adding that without his involvement, the series would never truly be Cowboy Bebop. He did not elaborate on what specifically he found objectionable in the opening scene, but his comments suggest that the show failed to capture the spirit of the original anime.
The value of the original anime is somehow far higher now, Watanabe pointed out, emphasizing the importance of remaining true to the source material and keeping the original creators involved in the process of production. This is a common point of contention within certain communities, as fans often express frustration when adaptations deviate too much from the source material.
Although the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics praising the modified character arcs and others taking issue with the pacing, the show had a strong debut on the streaming service. However, viewership quickly declined over the course of the following weeks, leading to its ultimate cancellation.
Despite the cancellation, Netflix has been working on several other live-action adaptations of popular anime series, including One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The comments by Watanabe highlight the challenges of adapting beloved properties for a new medium, and the importance of striking the right balance between staying faithful to the source material and making necessary changes to suit the new format.
