Megamind 2 Establishes Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Milestone for DreamWorks

Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate’s abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score marks a significant disappointment for DreamWorks. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2010 animated superhero film premiered on March 1st alongside an eight-episode series titled ‘Megamind Rules!’ However, despite the original film’s critical acclaim, Megamind 2 fell short with critics.

Since its debut, Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate has garnered the dubious distinction of being the first DreamWorks-produced film to receive a 0% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. In comparison, the original Megamind earned a respectable 73% score on the platform. Furthermore, Megamind 2’s dismal reception set a new record for the lowest-ever score for a DreamWorks-produced film, surpassing Shark Tale’s 35% rating.

The bottom 10 DreamWorks movies based on critic scores are as follows:

  1. Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate – 9%
  2. Shark Tale – 35%
  3. Shrek The Third – 42%
  4. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas – 45%
  5. The Boss Baby: Family Business – 46%
  6. The Road to Eldorado – 49%
  7. Spirit Untamed – 47%
  8. Bee Movie – 50%
  9. Home – 53%
  10. Boss Baby – 53%

Megamind 2 was produced by DreamWorks Animation Television, which has primarily focused on series production. The sequel marks only the second film produced by this division, with Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans being the first. Despite facing simultaneous production of the film and series with a limited budget, Megamind 2’s critical reception is based on just five reviews.

The disappointing performance of Megamind 2 is not entirely surprising, given the departure from the original cast and the film’s low-budget, direct-to-streaming release. While DreamWorks has a track record of critical successes with films like How to Train Your Dragon and Chicken Run, Megamind 2’s failure underscores a departure from the studio’s typical acclaim. Fans and industry observers can only hope that this setback will serve as a learning experience for DreamWorks, preventing similar disappointments in the future.
