Marvel Studios Affirms the Inaugural Canon Event in the MCU

Marvel Studios has officially outlined the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) origin and pivotal events in its TV shows and films. The studio, in The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline, meticulously details the timeline of events, including key moments from films like Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, Black Panther, and Eternals.

This comprehensive guide confirms the MCU’s impressive runtime, totaling 282.9 hours or 11.79 days, with 24 shows, 33 films, and six canon Netflix shows. The book delves into the universe’s genesis, emphasizing the role of Celestials as one of the oldest and most powerful life forms. Celestials, introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy and further explored in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Eternals, played a crucial role in cosmic events.

The timeline covers significant events, from the creation of Infinity Stones after The Big Bang to Earth, Asgard, and Yggdrasil’s formation, as referenced in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. The Eternals’ role in cosmic events and their countermeasure against Deviants, as depicted in the 2021 film Eternals, is highlighted. The book provides context to MCU films, connecting Scarlet Witch’s prophecy in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to the creation of Mount Wundagore.

Canonical events like the arrival of Vibranium on Earth, shaping Wakanda and Atlantis, are also explored. As the MCU delves deeper into the multiverse, the book serves as a valuable reference for understanding the franchise’s intricate canon.

Looking ahead, Avengers 5 and 6, Marvel Studios’ upcoming tentpole events, are scheduled for 2026 and 2027. All MCU releases up to Echo and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are available on Disney+, with The Marvels awaiting a streaming release.
