‘Kung Fu Panda 4′ Review: DreamWorks’ Beloved Hero Returns in a Fluffy Sequel

Jack Black reprises his role in the animated franchise “Kung Fu Panda” for a fourth installment, which, while entertaining, feels somewhat unnecessary.

The tradition of A-list actors lending their voices to animated films has been hit-or-miss, but Jack Black’s commitment to his roles always shines through. From his villainous turn in “Super Mario Bros. Movie” to his iconic portrayal of Po in the “Kung Fu Panda” series, Black consistently brings energy and charm to his characters. In “Kung Fu Panda 4,” his performance continues to be a highlight, elevating the film despite its shortcomings.

The latest installment picks up after the original trilogy, with Po now firmly established as the Dragon Warrior. When Master Shifu informs him of the need to choose a successor, Po finds himself reluctant to embrace change. However, when a new threat emerges in the form of the shapeshifting sorceress Chameleon, Po embarks on one last adventure to stop her.

While “Kung Fu Panda 4” delivers its fair share of laughs and impressive action sequences, it ultimately feels like a retread of familiar territory. The plotlines and character arcs echo themes explored in previous films, albeit with less impact. The addition of new characters and settings, such as the crime-ridden metropolis of Juniper City, fails to inject freshness into the narrative.

Director Mike Mitchell and co-director Stephanie Ma Stine deliver visually stunning animation and dynamic fight scenes, maintaining the franchise’s trademark style. However, the film’s reliance on nostalgia and formulaic storytelling limits its potential for innovation.

Despite its shortcomings, “Kung Fu Panda 4” remains an enjoyable watch, largely thanks to Jack Black’s charismatic performance as Po. His chemistry with Awkwafina, who voices the cunning thief Zhen, adds depth to the film’s humor and dynamics. However, the sequel ultimately falls short of recapturing the magic of its predecessors, settling for familiarity over originality.
