Jacob Tremblay & Paul Walter Hauser Lead DreamWorks’ ‘Orion and the Dark Stars


Screen Rant had the opportunity to sit down with Jacob Tremblay and Paul Walter Hauser to discuss their involvement in the imaginative DreamWorks film, “Orion and the Dark,” as well as their characters’ roles in bringing this unique story to life.

“DreamWorks brings another imaginative children’s book to the screen with ‘Orion and the Dark,’ a tale centered around a young boy named Orion who grapples with his fears, particularly of the dark. Jacob Tremblay and Golden Globe winner Paul Walter Hauser lead the stellar cast of “Orion and the Dark,” joined by a talented ensemble including Angela Bassett, Colin Hanks, Natasia Demetriou, Golda Rosheuvel, Nat Faxon, Aparna Nancherla, Carla Gugino, and Matt Dellapina. The script, penned by Oscar-winner Charlie Kaufman in his children’s genre debut, promises a uniquely self-aware and imaginative exploration of childhood fears and the journey to overcoming them.

In their interview with Screen Rant, Tremblay and Hauser shared their thoughts on the project and their characters:

Jacob Tremblay expressed his fascination with the story’s uniqueness and the captivating concept art, emphasizing his desire to be a part of such a creative endeavor. Meanwhile, Paul Walter Hauser highlighted his excitement for book adaptations and the opportunity to work with Kaufman’s script, describing it as a movie he was eager to join in any capacity.

When asked about the animation process and whether the characters were tailored to their performances, Tremblay and Hauser mentioned the interpretive nature of their voiceover sessions. While there may have been subtle characteristics infused into their characters based on their performances, they noted that the animation process was primarily driven by the animators.

Regarding Tremblay’s character, Orion, and the challenge of voicing both the child and adult versions, Tremblay discussed the character’s maturity and intelligence, which influenced his portrayal.

Lastly, Tremblay shared his excitement about crossing over into live-action superhero roles, citing his enjoyment of recent projects like “Harley Quinn” and “Invincible” and expressing his dream of delving further into the live-action superhero world.

As for “Orion and the Dark,” the film follows the adventures of Orion, a young boy overwhelmed by fears, as he confronts his anxieties with the help of The Dark. Together, they embark on a journey to discover the beauty and wonder of life, confronting the unknown and learning to embrace joy along the way.

“Orion and the Dark” is set to premiere on Netflix on February 2nd, promising a heartwarming and imaginative tale for audiences of all ages to enjoy.
