DreamWorks’ ‘The Wild Robot’ Combines Elements of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘The Iron Giant

DreamWorks Animation has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming animated film, “The Wild Robot,” and it promises a visually stunning experience filled with vibrant wildlife and captivating natural landscapes. At the heart of the trailer is the central character, Roz, voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, whose design draws inspiration from iconic robots spanning decades of animated cinema.

Initially resembling the rolling ball design of BB-8 from the “Star Wars” sequel series, Roz’s transformation reveals elements reminiscent of characters such as the abandoned robot from Hayao Miyazaki’s “Castle in the Sky,” the endearing Wall-E from Disney’s “WALL-E,” the lovable Baymax from “Big Hero 6,” and the soulful Iron Giant. The trailer’s poignant voiceover, “Sometimes, to survive, you must become more than you were programmed to be,” echoes the central message of “The Iron Giant.”

While the trailer primarily focuses on Roz’s design and the breathtaking animation, it offers a glimpse into the film’s premise of survival and adaptation. The storyline follows Roz, a ROZZUM unit 7134, stranded on an uninhabited island, as she navigates the harsh environment and forms bonds with the island’s animal inhabitants, eventually becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

The star-studded voice cast includes Pedro Pascal as fox Fink, Catherine O’Hara as opossum Pinktail, Bill Nighy as goose Longneck, Kit Connor as gosling Brightbill, and Stephanie Hsu as Vontra, a robot who intersects with Roz’s life on the island. Additionally, the film features the talents of Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames, among others.

Directed by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders, known for his work on “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Lilo & Stitch,” and produced by Jeff Hermann, “The Wild Robot” promises to be a powerful exploration of self-discovery, the relationship between technology and nature, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. Inspired by Peter Brown’s best-selling illustrated middle-grade novel, the film is set to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative and breathtaking visuals, offering a fresh and poignant cinematic experience.
