Disappointing News Regarding Black Knight’s Future in the MCU

Eternals star Kit Harington recently provided insights into the trajectory of his character, Dane Whitman, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), shedding light on Marvel Studios’ plans for the beloved superhero.

Following the release of Marvel’s Eternals in 2021, which introduced Harington as Dane Whitman, fans eagerly anticipated the character’s future in the MCU. Whitman, a history professor at the Natural History Museum in London and the romantic interest of Sersi (played by Gemma Chan), showcased potential for further exploration, particularly with hints of his transformation into the Black Knight.

However, despite the tantalizing prospects, Harington revealed in an interview with Screen Rant that Marvel Studios has yet to update him on Whitman’s next appearance. While expressing his eagerness to reprise the role and delve into the character’s evolution, Harington admitted to being kept in the dark about Marvel’s current plans for Whitman’s storyline. Despite the uncertainty, Harington reiterated his passion for the character and his willingness to return to the MCU if given the opportunity.

Furthermore, Harington disclosed that Whitman was initially slated to make a cameo appearance in the Disney+ series Moon Knight. However, plans for the cameo were scrapped, as the head writer of the series, Jeremy Slater, opted against including Whitman unless his involvement significantly progressed the character’s narrative arc. This decision underscores Marvel’s commitment to organic storytelling and character development within the MCU.

Notably, Eternals concluded with a post-credits scene teasing Whitman’s future as the Black Knight. As Whitman reaches for the Ebony Blade, an off-screen Blade, portrayed by Mahershala Ali, questions whether he is “ready” to wield the ancient sword. While this scene sparked speculation about Whitman’s involvement in Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot, Harington clarified that his character was never intended to appear in the Blade movie.

In addition to his role in the MCU, Harington addressed his other iconic character, Jon Snow, from the hit series Game of Thrones. He revealed that plans for a spinoff series centered around Jon Snow have been put on hold due to creative differences and a lack of consensus on the story direction. Despite the setback, Harington expressed optimism about the possibility of revisiting the character in the future.

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding his future projects, Harington’s fans can anticipate his upcoming film, Blood for Dust, set to premiere in theaters and digitally on April 19, 2024. Meanwhile, Marvel enthusiasts can continue to speculate on the potential return of Dane Whitman and eagerly await Marvel Studios’ next move within the ever-expanding MCU.
