Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action series adaptation of Death Note has found its writer in the form of Halia Abdel-Meguid. Selected to write and executive produce the series, Abdel-Meguid brings a deep appreciation for the original source material, having been a devoted fan of the Death Note manga and anime. Impressively, she is not only well-versed in the world of Death Note, but also speaks fluent Japanese and has even resided in Tokyo for a period of time, immersing herself in the culture and atmosphere that inspired the captivating story (according to Deadline).
Abdel-Meguid’s journey in the entertainment industry began as an actor and musician in London before shifting her focus to screenwriting. In addition to her work on Death Note, she has been entrusted with the task of adapting Erik Larson’s acclaimed book, The Devil in the White City, into a series for Hulu, showcasing her versatile storytelling abilities.
The live-action Death Note series was initially announced in July, with the talented Duffer Brothers, creators of the wildly popular Stranger Things, on board as producers. The project falls under the umbrella of their newly established production company, Upside Down Pictures. This adaptation is just one of the multiple projects currently in development at Netflix as part of the Duffer Brothers’ overall deal with the streaming platform. Additionally, Abdel-Meguid serves as a writing consultant on other Upside Down projects, including Netflix’s planned series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman, further demonstrating her involvement in creating exciting and immersive storytelling experiences.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Death Note revolves around the protagonist Light Yagami, a highly intelligent and cynical teenager who stumbles upon a mystical notebook known as the Death Note, belonging to a Shinigami (a god of death) named Ryuk. Light discovers that by writing a person’s name in the notebook while picturing their face, he can effectively cause their demise. Adopting the pseudonym “Kira,” he uses the notebook to eliminate violent criminals, believing himself to be the sole arbiter of justice. However, Light’s descent into madness becomes apparent as he succumbs to the allure of power and begins considering himself a divine force capable of creating a utopian world. As he carries out his mission, Light must navigate the pursuit of law enforcement, including his own father, who are determined to uncover his true identity. Standing in his way is the eccentric and brilliant detective known as L, resulting in a thrilling and suspenseful cat-and-mouse game between the two.
With the talented Halia Abdel-Meguid at the helm as writer and executive producer, alongside the renowned Duffer Brothers producing, fans can eagerly anticipate the development of the Death Note series as it aims to capture the dark, morally complex, and intellectually captivating essence of the original manga and anime.
