“Wish” serves as a homage to earlier Disney animated movies

While “Wish” may not claim the title of the ultimate Disney masterpiece, it certainly delighted me. Unlike the epic Frozen, it pays homage to a century of Disney magic, with one character even hitting the impressive age of 100. The film is a treasure trove of nods to beloved Disney classics.

“Wish” may not secure a spot among Disney’s timeless classics, but it intricately explores the influence of wishes, granted or not. The film cleverly underscores the significance of the journey toward one’s dreams, resonating on both an individual and community level.

A notable highlight for Disney enthusiasts is the movie’s playful inclusion of Easter eggs. From subtle nods to iconic characters to clever references to beloved films, “Wish” offers a delightful game of spot-the-reference. The familiar theme of wishing upon a star, famously depicted in Pinocchio, is prominently featured. Additionally, Asha’s Cinderella-like transformation and reliance on talking animals echo the enchantment found in other Disney classics.

The animation is commendable, and Ariana DeBose injects vibrant energy into the character of Asha. Chris Pine, known as Captain Kirk 2.0, takes on the role of the antagonist, reminiscent of the swaggering Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.

Despite its visual appeal, “Wish” falls short in terms of plot execution, lacks notably catchy songs, and doesn’t deliver strong humor. Nevertheless, as a lighthearted adventure with a heartwarming message, “Wish” remains a delightful cinematic experience, even if it doesn’t soar to the heights of Disney’s most celebrated works. For those seeking a charming exploration of magic, dreams, and discovery, “Wish” is certainly worth a viewing.
