Why the creator of Cowboy Bebop is refusing to watch the live-action adaptation on Netflix

Shinichiro Watanabe is a prominent figure in the anime industry, known for his imaginative storytelling and creative direction. He is particularly famous for his work on the critically acclaimed anime series Cowboy Bebop, which has become a classic in the genre.

The original Cowboy Bebop was created and animated by Sunrise Inc., now called Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc., under Watanabe’s direction. The series first aired in 1998 and followed a group of bounty hunters in a post-apocalyptic world where Earth has become largely uninhabitable. Cowboy Bebop garnered unanimous acclaim for its imaginative storytelling, character development, and music composed by Yoko Kanno.

Watanabe and Kanno’s relationship is cyclical, with Kanno’s music often inspiring Watanabe to create new scenes for Cowboy Bebop, and Watanabe’s scenes inspiring Kanno to compose new scores. The two worked together again on other anime titles, including Kids on the Slope and Terror in Resonance.

After directing Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe went on to direct Samurai Champloo, which similarly gathered positive reception. He also served as the chief director for Space Dandy, another successful anime series. In 2021, he signed on as the creative director for Blade Runner: Black Lotus, a television series set in the Blade Runner universe.

Despite his success in the anime industry, Watanabe was not pleased with the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop produced by Netflix. While he served as a creative consultant for the series, he could not bring himself to watch it beyond the opening scene in a casino. Watanabe believed that the series did not capture the essence of the original anime and would not have been true to the source material had he not been involved in its production. The live-action adaptation received mixed to negative reviews and was cancelled after one season.

In honor of Cowboy Bebop’s 25th anniversary, the series will receive a limited edition Blu-ray box set, which will allow fans to relive the adventures of Spike Spiegel and his fellow bounty hunters. The original anime series is available on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Funimation, where it continues to attract new viewers and inspire new generations of anime creators.
