And is that Austin Butler too?
What’s the connection between ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and ‘Hannah Montana’? At first glance, absolutely nothing. But that didn’t stop Larry David, the star of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and co-creator of ‘Seinfeld,’ from making a cameo appearance on Miley Cyrus’ popular sitcom. For those unfamiliar with the Disney Channel original series, ‘Hannah Montana’ ran from 2006 to 2011, spinning a fictional tale of a high school student leading a double life as a world-famous pop star. In essence, it’s a family-friendly sitcom filled with light-hearted humor and endearing characters.
While Larry David has graced the sets of several sitcoms, his comedic style couldn’t be further from that of Disney Channel. Whereas ‘Hannah Montana’ features altruistic heroes, ‘Seinfeld’ follows self-centered and shallow individuals. While ‘Hannah Montana’ appeals to audiences of all ages, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is clearly tailored for a more mature audience. While Miley Cyrus’s character exudes cheerfulness and optimism, Larry David’s portrayal of himself is that of a pessimistic cynic. The union of these two seemingly disparate worlds remains something of a mystery, but it certainly made for an entertaining television episode.
When did Larry David make his appearance on ‘Hannah Montana’?
The cameo occurred on May 18, 2007, during Episode 7 of Season 2 of ‘Hannah Montana,’ airing on the Disney Channel. Titled ‘My Best Friend’s Boyfriend,’ most of the episode follows the typical adventures of Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus) and her friends. This time, Miley is determined to prove to her best friend Lilly (portrayed by Emily Osment) that her new boyfriend Luke (played by Sterling Knight) has been unfaithful.
As Miley and Lilly decide to have dinner at an upscale restaurant, Larry David makes his entrance. Waiting impatiently for a table, Larry is, as usual, annoyed by the wait. Larry isn’t alone; he’s flanked by his two real-life daughters, Cazzie David and Romy David. Frustrated by the delay, Larry inquires with the Maitre’d (played by Jorge Luis Abreu) if there’s anything that can be done. When the Maitre’d responds negatively, Larry devises a typically harebrained scheme, reminiscent of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’ He turns to young Romy and falsely declares it’s her birthday, an assertion that Romy promptly denies. Larry then confidently shifts to Cazzie, who also dismisses the scheme by stating her birthday was two months ago.
Despite their efforts, it appears that no tables are available for Larry’s party of three. However, recognizing Miley’s alter ego as the global superstar Hannah Montana, the restaurant host miraculously conjures a table and seats, getting them seated promptly. Larry protests, and Cazzie even hints at her father’s connection to ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ two shows far too mature for ‘Hannah Montana’s’ target demographic. Romy concedes that Larry is nowhere near as popular as the global pop sensation, while Cazzie suggests that they might have secured a table if “Uncle Jerry” were present. Annoyed by his daughter’s reference to Jerry Seinfeld, Larry and his daughters storm out of the upscale establishment.
Austin Butler Was Also in This ‘Hannah Montana’ Episode?
Yes, long before becoming an Academy Award-nominated actor, Austin Butler had his second-ever role on ‘Hannah Montana.’ His first role was in ‘Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,’ another beloved children’s sitcom from the mid-2000s. Butler played two characters during his relatively brief appearances on the show. The first character was Toby, a background figure from Season 1. The second character was Luke’s cousin Derek, who appears early in the episode when Hannah and Lilly embark on a double date movie night. Unfortunately, Derek spends the entire movie trembling in fear at whatever is happening on screen.
Surprisingly, prior to his breakout role in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ and his Oscar-nominated lead performance in ‘Elvis,’ Austin Butler had quite the resume with Disney Channel. In addition to his Disney debut on ‘Hannah Montana,’ Butler also made appearances in ‘Zeke and Luther,’ ‘Wizards of Waverly Place,’ ‘Jonas,’ and the High School Musical spin-off ‘Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.’ He also made appearances on a few other Nickelodeon shows, such as ‘iCarly’ and ‘Zoey 101.’
Today, Butler’s career has skyrocketed since his Oscar nomination. He is set to star in ‘Masters of the Air,’ the spiritual successor to ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Pacific’ on Apple TV+. Butler will also play the infamous villain Feyd-Rautha in Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sci-fi sequel, ‘Dune: Part Two.’ Additionally, he is cast in Jeff Nichols’ return to filmmaking with ‘The Bikeriders.’
‘Hannah Montana’ Boasts Numerous Celebrity Cameos
In addition to Larry David and Austin Butler, ‘Hannah Montana’ features several celebrity guest appearances. Among the most notable is country music legend and entrepreneur Dolly Parton, credited simply as Aunt Dolly. Parton’s character mirrors Cyrus’s persona as it portrays an idealized version of herself. This connection makes sense as Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus’s real-life godmother.
Another recurring guest star on the show is Vicki Lawrence, who plays Miley’s grandmother, Meemaw. Lawrence is best known for her various roles on the immensely popular sketch comedy series ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ where she frequently portrayed another cantankerous grandmother character. Her regular appearances on ‘Hannah Montana’ provide grandmotherly wisdom to her beloved grandchild.
The show also boasts a roster of other prominent guest celebrities, including Gilbert Gottfried, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, John Cena, Selena Gomez, Sheryl Crow, Ray Liotta, Brooke Shields, and more. Additionally, ‘Hannah Montana’ has occasionally crossed over with other Disney Channel series, such as ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,’ ‘That’s So Raven,’ and ‘Wizards of Waverly Place.
