In the Sword Art Online story, Death Gun served as a particularly unnerving antagonist due to his unique ability to kill people both in the virtual world and the real world. This was something that was believed to have been lost to the series after the Aincrad Incident, which made his murders all the more frightening.
Throughout the Phantom Bullet Arc, the mystery surrounding Death Gun’s identity and motivations was slowly revealed. It was eventually discovered that the concept of Death Gun was formulated by the Shinkawa brothers, Shouichi and Kyouji. Shouichi, also known as “XaXa,” was a former member of the player-killing guild Laughing Coffin and an SAO survivor. After the death game was over, he needed something to do and was recommended by Kyouji, also known as “Spiegel,” to play Gun Gale Online.
At first, Shouichi found the game to be only mildly interesting. However, he soon discovered an exploit that allowed him to learn the names, addresses, and other personal information of the players. This led to the development of the avatar Sterben, which was equipped with the infamous Death Gun. This Type 54 “Black Star” would be shot at certain players in the game, causing them to die in the real world.
The main targets of Death Gun were GGO players who lived alone and whose personal information was obtained by the Shinkawas. As Kyouji shot a player with the Death Gun, the other brother would sneak into the player’s house in real life and inject them with a lethal dose of succinylcholine. Both tasks had to be performed at the designated time to create the illusion that the players were being killed in-game. The purpose of these murders was to strike fear in the GGO player base and possibly the VRMMO scene in general.
Despite getting away with at least two murders using this method, Death Gun did not earn the notoriety the Shinkawas were hoping for. To change things up, they decided to kill some people in the Bullet of Bullets tournament, including Asada “Sinon” Shino. Due to Kyouji’s sick obsession with Shino, he insisted on being the one to kill her in real life. To help them kill all the targets at the right times, they recruited Kanamoto “Johnny Black” Atsushi, another Laughing Coffin veteran, and made him the third Death Gun.
In the end, however, Death Gun’s plans were thwarted. Kirito managed to defeat the player killer before he could kill Sinon, the Shinkawas were discovered and arrested, and the Death Gun incident was resolved. Atsushi later returned to the story to inject Kirito, which initiated the Alicization Arc, but he was also arrested.
While the mystery surrounding Shouichi’s true face remains unresolved, the Death Gun incident has been concluded, and it is unlikely that the character will reappear in future Sword Art Online storylines. Understanding Death Gun’s motivations and methods is essential to fully appreciating the Phantom Bullet Arc.
