“What Role Did Anakin Skywalker Play in Ahsoka?

Ahsoka Episode 5: An Unconventional Reunion with Anakin Skywalker

The highly-anticipated Ahsoka Episode 5 marks a significant moment in the Star Wars universe as it brings Ahsoka Tano (portrayed by Rosario Dawson) face to face with her former master, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen). This reunion, however, is far from the typical encounter with a Force ghost.

In Ahsoka Episode 5, Anakin reappears to continue Ahsoka’s Jedi training, but their journey takes them through her past, suggesting that Anakin’s return isn’t a straightforward manifestation of a Force ghost. Here’s why Anakin’s presence in Ahsoka goes beyond the usual conventions of Force ghosts, while still remaining a powerful and pivotal element in the storyline.

Ahsoka’s Connection to the World Between Worlds Initially, it appears that Ahsoka has met her end in Ahsoka Episode 4 after a duel with the dark Jedi Baylan Skoll (played by Ray Stevenson). However, Ahsoka finds herself in what seems to be the Force nexus known as the World Between Worlds, where she is greeted by her former master. But this isn’t a traditional visitation by a Force ghost, and the nature of their interaction hints at something more complex.

It’s important to note that the World Between Worlds Ahsoka enters in this episode isn’t quite the same as the one explored alongside Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels. Instead, it seems to be a unique backdrop created by the Force itself. This suggests that what Ahsoka experiences might be happening within her own mind, with the Force playing a significant role in these events. Anakin himself triggers key flashbacks to Ahsoka’s past as part of the lesson he imparts.

Jacen and Hera’s Involvement Another intriguing aspect is the ability of Jacen Syndulla to perceive the lightsaber duel between Anakin and Ahsoka. Jacen, the son of Hera Syndulla, has Force-sensitive abilities inherited from his father, Kanan Jarrus. Jacen senses Ahsoka’s physical state and emotional experience, indicating that Ahsoka’s journey is more than a mere hallucination. This suggests that she’s undergoing a profound Force-related vision while hovering between life and death.

Anakin’s Appearance: De-aging and Dual Identity Anakin’s portrayal in Ahsoka Episode 5 is significant. Unlike his appearances in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which used minimal digital de-aging effects, Ahsoka presents a younger Anakin, akin to his animated form in The Clone Wars series. This vivid representation, distinct from the traditional translucent appearance of Force ghosts, raises questions about the nature of Anakin’s presence.

Anakin’s flickering between his former self and Darth Vader, along with his use of a red lightsaber and Sith-like eyes, allude to his complex legacy as the Chosen One. This suggests that he’s more than just a Force ghost; he encapsulates Ahsoka’s memories of his transformation. These darker elements mirror Ahsoka’s inner conflict and apprehension about her past and future as a Jedi.

The Flooding of the World Between Worlds The episode concludes with the World Between Worlds flooding as Ahsoka returns to the physical world of Seatos. This transformation provides further evidence that Ahsoka’s experiences were likely a Force-induced vision within her own consciousness rather than a visit to the actual cosmic plane seen in Star Wars Rebels.

Real or Vision? In essence, Ahsoka’s encounter with Anakin was likely a profound Force vision. It’s reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s experience in The Empire Strikes Back when he confronted his fears in the cave on Dagobah. While it occurred within her own mind, this doesn’t diminish the significance of Ahsoka’s experiences or her reunion with Anakin. In the realm of the Force, the impact remains substantial. The meeting between master and apprentice, though unconventional, holds deep meaning. As Ahsoka’s character continues to evolve, the possibility remains that a more traditional appearance of Anakin’s Force ghost may yet be revealed in future episodes.
