Bandai Namco and Kadokawa have exciting news for Sword Art Online fans. At the Full Dive Continue livestream event, held in celebration of the anime’s 10th anniversary, a new game called Sword Art Online: Last Recollection was announced. This action-RPG serves as a direct follow-up to Alicization Lycoris, the game released in 2020. Last Recollection is set to be launched in 2023 and will be available on current consoles and PC platforms.
The teaser trailer for Sword Art Online: Last Recollection, showcased during the event, introduced fans to the game’s premise. It revealed that the storyline of Last Recollection is an adaptation of the popular “War of Underworld” arc from the original Sword Art Online novels and anime. Following the narrative from the original story, the virtual world of Underworld, where Kirito and his friends were previously trapped in Alicization Lycoris, is now on the brink of ruin. The gate dividing the Human Empire and the Dark Territory has been breached, leading to the commencement of the “Final Load Test.” This massive invasion aims to evaluate the potential of the artificial intelligence lifeforms residing in Underworld.
Last Recollection introduces a new character named Dorothy, a dark knight who manages to escape the Dark Territory alongside Sarai. Dorothy is determined to defy her predetermined fate, raising thought-provoking questions about the distinction between the world’s end and her own demise.
One notable aspect of Sword Art Online: Last Recollection is its incorporation of the unique timeline established in previous Sword Art Online game adaptations. The game will feature the largest playable character roster ever seen in the franchise, providing players with a wide range of choices. Additionally, Last Recollection will boast the highest number of story episodes, promising an immersive and expansive gameplay experience. Alongside the new original characters, such as Dorothy, the teaser trailer and official website also showcase familiar faces from the War for Underworld story, including Shuster (aka Shasta), Lipia, Iskahn, and Dil, who serve as leaders of the Dark Territory’s armies. Once again, singer ReoNa will lend her voice to provide the game’s theme song.
To further excite fans, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, the voice actor behind Kirito in the anime and games, recorded a special video message. In the message, Matsuoka clarified that the game’s timeline diverges from that of the anime and novels. He revealed that Last Recollection will introduce new events and characters, exploring alternative outcomes that deviate from the original story. The taglines for Last Recollection hint at the novelty of the experience, promising a fresh and captivating narrative that delves into what could have happened if certain characters, like Kirito and Eugeo, were present during pivotal events from the original storyline.
Sword Art Online: Last Recollection is currently scheduled for release in Japan in 2023, targeting platforms such as PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. While overseas release plans have not been confirmed yet, fans worldwide eagerly await news of international availability. It’s worth noting that the previous Sword Art Online game, Alicization Lycoris, initially launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with the Nintendo Switch version becoming available in 2022, several years later.
With Sword Art Online: Last Recollection, fans can anticipate a thrilling and expansive gaming experience that breathes new life into the beloved franchise, offering fresh perspectives on the iconic War of Underworld storyline while introducing compelling new characters and gameplay elements.
