Voice actor for The Boulder in Avatar: The Last Airbender revealed

The iconic voice behind The Boulder in the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender belongs to none other than a renowned professional wrestler, providing a surprising yet fitting choice for the character. The Boulder, an earthbending wrestler within the show, is one of the most memorable minor characters, thanks in large part to the energetic and striking performance of his voice actor. Inspired by the wrestling persona of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, The Boulder’s name, appearance, inflections in the voice performance, and tendency to refer to himself in the third person all bear resemblance to Johnson’s larger-than-life presence. However, The Boulder is also a distinct character in his own right, known for his penchant for earth puns and an arc that sees him renouncing wrestling to fight for the Earth Kingdom during The Day of Black Sun.

While Dwayne Johnson was not available to lend his voice to the character, the creators of Avatar, Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, opted for a fellow professional wrestler and occasional friend instead. It was a clever instance of stunt casting, considering the real-life connection between the two wrestlers. Little did the creators anticipate that the wrestler chosen for the role would possess incredible voice-acting skills, delivering a hilariously dynamic portrayal of The Boulder. The voice actor’s specific line delivery and ability to channel The Rock’s essence contributed greatly to solidifying The Boulder’s legacy among the most memorable side characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley, renowned for his portrayals of wrestling personas such as Dude Love, Cactus Jack, and the deranged Mankind, stepped into the role of The Boulder. While these wrestling personas may differ from the verbose and pun-loving nature of The Boulder, Foley’s experience playing wrestlers proved valuable. He has portrayed himself as well as fictional wrestlers in various live-action and voice-acting projects, including WWE games, The Peanut Butter Falcon, the sitcom 30 Rock, and the Adult Swim series Squidbillies. Interestingly, Foley also reprised his role as The Boulder in the Nintendo Wii game Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth, marking his sole credit in a non-wrestling video game.

In fact, the creators of Avatar initially aspired to cast Dwayne Johnson himself as the voice of The Boulder. During an episode of the Avatar: Braving The Elements podcast, hosted by Janet Varney (the voice of Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice of Zuko), Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko revealed their original intention. However, upon discovering that Johnson was not available for television projects at the time, they turned to Mick Foley, considering his association with Johnson in the wrestling world. Foley and Johnson had wrestled together as a tag team known as The Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection, securing the WWF tag-team championship thrice. They had also faced each other in the ring, with one notable match in 1998 where Mankind defeated The Rock to win the WWF World Title.

Despite Johnson’s unavailability, Foley’s portrayal of The Boulder was enriched by the clever and playful observations that can only stem from a friend’s impression of another friend. Notably, Foley and Johnson’s real-life friendship persists to this day, with Foley mentioning in an interview with the Herald Tribune that they remain in touch and that their daughters have developed a close bond. While Johnson has since made a successful transition to television with appearances in shows like Ballers and his autobiographical production Young Rock, there is no doubt that his portrayal of an earthbending version of himself would have been memorable and a worthy addition to Avatar: The Last Airbender’s voice cast. Nonetheless, Mick Foley’s exceptional voice acting performance as The Boulder continues to stand out and be celebrated as one of the highlights among the show’s unforgettable characters.
