Vintage Camera Repurposed for Star Wars Cosplay Prop

While many enthusiasts are known for crafting replica lightsabers from Star Wars or tricorders from Star Trek, venturing into the realm of recreating lesser-known props like the binoculars featured in The Last Jedi is a less common endeavor. However, The Smugglers Room took on this challenge and produced a remarkable pair using repurposed old parts, showcasing their ingenuity and dedication to the craft.

Unlike some of the more widely recognized props, these binoculars aren’t exact replicas but rather inspired builds that capture the essence of the original design. The foundation for this project was a Bell & Howell camera, a model similar to the one used in the film. Leveraging the tri-lens configuration of the camera, the builders set out to transform it into a pair of futuristic binoculars fit for the Star Wars universe.

To achieve the desired look and functionality, extensive modifications were necessary. The construction of a viewfinder was a crucial step in the process, requiring meticulous hand-cutting of Sintra PVC foam board to create the desired shape and structure. Additionally, layers of leather had to be carefully removed from the camera, revealing a weathered aluminum surface that lent a convincingly rugged aesthetic to the final prop.

Incorporating authentic details was paramount to capturing the spirit of the Star Wars universe. Random controls were strategically added to the exterior of the binoculars, further enhancing their appearance as advanced futuristic technology. Internally, LED lighting was installed to give the illusion of powered sci-fi optics, adding an extra layer of depth and realism to the build.

To complete the look and ensure practicality for cosplay purposes, a handcrafted leather strap was added to the binoculars, providing both functionality and authenticity. While these binoculars may not offer functional capabilities like augmented reality or rangefinder functionality, they serve as a visually striking and immersive accessory for any Star Wars-inspired costume.

Ultimately, while this project may not have resulted in functional binoculars, its success lies in its ability to capture the essence of the source material and bring it to life in a tangible and visually stunning form. Whether as a standalone display piece or as part of a cosplay ensemble, these meticulously crafted binoculars serve as a testament to the creativity and passion of the builders, showcasing their ability to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art inspired by a galaxy far, far away.
