Uncovering the Unseen Iconic Pixar Character That Almost Came to Life

We Were Close to Seeing This Iconic Pixar Character on Screen

The Incredibles isn’t just a great animated film; it’s a great superhero film. With a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s hailed among the best in the genre, closely followed by The Incredibles 2 at 93%. These movies, courtesy of Pixar, delivered thrilling action, humor, tension (remember the heart-pounding “Plane Crash” scene), vivid visuals, and an exceptional voice cast that brought the characters to life. The Parr family, consisting of Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson), Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Edna Mode (Brad Bird), and Lucius Best/Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), among others, enriched the films’ charm.

The Incredibles universe features a deep mythology with characters beyond the main cast, some of whom we haven’t seen on screen. There’s the Thrilling Three, including Apogee, Phylange, and Gazerbeam, and other heroes like Dynaguy and Thunderhead whose tragic fates are explained by Edna Mode’s “NO CAPES” rule. However, there’s one iconic character in the franchise who never appeared on screen but left a lasting impression through her voice alone – Honey Best (voiced by Kimberly Adair Clark).

Honey Best’s memorable debut in The Incredibles occurs during the Omnidroid attack on Metroville. In a hilarious and relatable scene, Honey and Lucius/Frozone engage in a witty exchange over his supersuit, with her famous line: “Greater good? I am your wife! I’m the greatest good you are ever gonna get!” The chemistry between Clark and Jackson resonates with viewers, making the moment a classic.

With the anticipation of The Incredibles 2, fans expected to see more of the beloved character, Honey. Pixar’s creative team drafted various designs for her character and even storyboarded a scene for her introduction in the sequel. In this unreleased scene, set as The Underminer wreaks havoc, Lucius tries to retrieve his supersuit, hidden by Honey. The ensuing banter, including freezing her shoes to the floor, was classic, but the scene didn’t make it into the final film.

The decision to keep Honey offscreen raised some controversy. While the released scene provided humor, the choice to keep her hidden from view sparked discussions about diversity on screen and the visual dynamic within the Best family compared to the Parr family. The controversy led to social media debates, with some perceiving it as an issue of underrepresentation in the Black community. The argument made was that the storyboarded scene’s artistic incompatibility didn’t mean Honey couldn’t appear elsewhere in the film.

Honey Best’s character, although unseen, joins a league of memorable offscreen figures who have a significant impact through their voice or description. Examples include Mrs. Wolowitz in The Big Bang Theory and Charlie from Charlie’s Angels, who was voiced by the legendary John Forsythe. Unless The Incredibles 3 becomes a reality, Honey will remain etched in our imaginations – a strong and witty woman capable of going head-to-head with Frozone and coming out on top.
