“Ukrainian and Russian Authorities Clash with Weeaboo HxH Gang”
A peculiar development has occurred amidst the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. A group of Russian enthusiasts, who are avid fans of the popular shonen manga Hunter x Hunter, have formed a gang that emulates the notorious thieves from the series.
Known as “PMC Ryodan” or “Redan PMC,” this group draws inspiration from Russia’s Private Military Group while paying homage to the Hunter x Hunter series’ infamous band of thieves called the Phantom Troupe or Gen’ei Ryodan. Similar to their fictional counterparts, PMC Ryodan is composed of rebellious teenagers.
PMC Ryodan initially gained attention by utilizing Telegram channels to organize flash mobs aimed at confronting football fans in Moscow. However, their violent activities have now extended to Ukrainian cities like Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv, causing concern for both Ukrainian and Russian authorities.
In addition to adopting the Phantom Troupe’s name, PMC Ryodan has also replicated their distinctive aesthetic. Members of the gang proudly display white spider symbols on their clothing, with each member sporting the number four—a significant symbol associated with deadly assassin Kalluto Zoldyck and former Phantom Troupe member Hisoka Morow.
Earlier this year, law enforcement detained 350 individuals associated with PMC Ryodan during a riot in Moscow. The rioters were found to possess gas canisters, knives, and brass knuckles, with a majority of them being minors.
Videos showcasing PMC Ryodan engaging in acts of violence in public spaces, including the Aviapark mall in Moscow, have circulated online, drawing criticism for their misguided attempts at emulating the Phantom Troupe. The gang’s actions appear amateurish, resembling a group of wannabe rebels rather than a formidable force. Such behavior has become a source of concern and disruption for Ukrainian citizens.
While Ukrainian authorities accuse Russia of exporting PMC Ryodan to exhaust their police force and spread misinformation about the war, Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also expressed a desire to put an end to the gang. He referred to their “pseudo-subculture” as a negative influence that has no beneficial impact on Russian youth.
A 15-year-old girl detained in Kyiv for organizing similar “flash mobs” attributed her actions to a pursuit of attention and dismissed reports of PMC Ryodan’s presence in Kyiv as Russian propaganda.
Recently, Ukrainian authorities claim to have apprehended the alleged 16-year-old ringleader of PMC Ryodan in Dnipro. In a subsequent video released by the police, the leader confessed that the group was formed to generate income through advertising posts, capitalizing on the popularity of the Redan subculture on social media platforms.
