The undeniable truth: MCU surpasses DCEU based on the numbers

Engaging in writing often involves the courageous act of confronting uncomfortable truths, and it’s imperative to address a matter that has been weighing heavily on my mind—the perception that, with James Gunn at the helm, Warner Bros and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will successfully steer their cinematic ship towards smoother and more prosperous waters. Unfortunately, for the forthcoming slate of five DCEU films slated for release in the next two years, that may not be an accurate assessment. The cold, hard reality is this: the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), despite its imperfections, stands out as the superior comic book film franchise, and this assertion is not mere conjecture—it’s grounded in measurable metrics.

Let’s delve into the monetary aspect first, where the MCU consistently outperforms the DCEU. A cursory look at the box office numbers provides a clear picture. According to Medium, Marvel has proven itself the more lucrative cinematic universe, with ten films raking in at least a billion dollars, led by the staggering success of Avengers: Endgame, which amassed nearly $3 billion worldwide. In contrast, the DCEU’s Aquaman is the lone film to breach the billion-dollar mark. The MCU’s broader financial success indicates an appealing quality that resonates with a larger audience, despite the fact that it comprises a staggering 32-film episodic series, totaling 110 hours of viewing. While DCEU films may average about $187 million less than MCU films, the sheer quantity of MCU productions dilutes this difference.

However, monetary success is just one facet. Critical acclaim is another significant aspect. Examining Rotten Tomatoes’ breakdown of Marvel and DC critical scores, DC barely edges out Marvel with a slight advantage. Yet, a closer look at the top ten chart provided by Rotten Tomatoes reveals a compelling story. Disregarding Spider-Man 2 and Logan (which are not part of the MCU), Marvel still claims half of the highest-rated comic book films. In contrast, only Wonder Woman from the DCEU secures a spot in this elite list. This prompts a critical question: Given the odds based on past performance, where would you place your bet for future success?

It’s crucial to acknowledge that money doesn’t tell the complete story. A film’s financial success doesn’t necessarily equate to its artistic or cultural value. The verdict of the masses may sometimes resemble the cacophony of a million voices, and in this context, critical acclaim becomes an essential yardstick. Yes, at the time of this article’s 2017 publication, DC marginally outpaced Marvel with an average Fresh score of 67.7% against Marvel’s 64.1%. However, considering sample size and the inclusion of older DC films in the data set, a comparison of the DCEU against the MCU could yield a different outcome. It wouldn’t be a fair competition.

In conclusion, the ongoing debate of Marvel versus DC is an eternal one, fueled by the passion of comic book enthusiasts. DC has undoubtedly gifted the world with iconic superheroes that have indelibly shaped pop culture. The introduction of Superman in Action Comics #1 marked the dawn of the Golden Age of Comics, and Batman, in various iterations, continues to captivate audiences. The legacy that DC has etched on America’s and the world’s popular interests is undeniable.

However, when we scrutinize the DCEU within this grand legacy, it emerges as a nadir—a low point. For all its imperfections, predictability, and perhaps an excess of quippiness, the MCU stands out as a blueprint for success that few production studios can effectively replicate. This is not an attempt to definitively close the book on the Marvel versus DC debate because such an endeavor would be ludicrous. Instead, it’s a recognition that when pitted against each other—DCEU versus MCU—numbers, in fact, don’t lie, and they consistently favor the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
