The recommended viewing order for all Fate anime shows and movies

The Fate series is a massive franchise that includes various entries for anime and video game fans to enjoy, but starting the series can seem intimidating. However, if you’re willing to give it a chance, the Fate franchise offers a unique and thrilling experience that combines noble warriors, historic figures, and mythological beings.

The premise of the Fate franchise is that mages can summon these warriors to fight on their behalf in a battle royale known as the Holy Grail War. The winner of the war is granted a wish. Originally, the Fate franchise began with the Fate/stay night visual novel, but it has since evolved and expanded across more VNs, light novels, and even anime and film.

Of course, with so much material available, it can be overwhelming for newcomers to the franchise. Thankfully, there is a specific order that fans can follow to help them feel more acquainted with Fate and the machinations of its Holy Grail War.

As of March 2023, the Fate series has even more offerings for fans, including the new anime Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- and upcoming games such as Fate/Samurai Remnant. For fans interested in getting into the Fate franchise to see what all the fuss is about with the female King Arthur and why everyone’s so crazy about her, it’s best to start from the beginning.

The first draft of the Stay Night series is a must-watch for fans, as it provides an introduction to the world of Fate and its characters. The mage-centric adventures in between the Fourth and Fifth Holy Grail War are also essential viewing, as are some of the more recent events that adapt some of F/GO’s more pivotal arcs.

Fate/Stay Night, the 2006 anime adaptation, stars Shirou Emiya, the sole survivor of an incident that engulfed an area in Fuyuki City in flames. A decade later, Shirou keeps himself busy by the day with schoolwork and some odd jobs. Meanwhile, he also secretly practices basic magic taught by his late adoptive father, Kiritsugu. Despite his ordinary nature, Shirou aspires to live by his adoptive father’s code: becoming a hero of justice. Unfortunately, a series of events would drag Shirou into the Holy Grail War.

Fans should treat Fate/stay night as a base introduction to the franchise, as the anime tries to incorporate all three routes in the VN, which makes it arguably kind of a mess. However, fans should strictly treat this 2006 anime as an interpretation of the “Fate Route,” focusing on Shirou’s relationship with Saber.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, the 2014 anime adaptation, seems to copy the first few episodes of the original Fate/stay night adaptation at first glance. However, things begin to change when Shirou Emiya and Rin Tohsaka are forced to team up for their survival. This time around, Shirou begins to have a growing friendship with the more experienced magi Tohsaka. At the same time, Shirou explores his immense dislike of her Servant, the mysterious Archer.

This adaptation branches away from the VN’s “Fate Route” and takes its “Unlimited Blade Works Route,” where Rin becomes Shirou’s leading lady. Given its recent adaptation, UBW 2014 has quite the striking visuals and more fleshed-out characters.

Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel I to III, the movie trilogy released in 2017, 2019, and 2020, seems to copy the first few days of Shirou’s life going into the Holy Grail War once again. However, this time around, Shirou becomes much closer to his childhood friend Sakura Matou. Understanding Sakura’s character and the role she plays in the overall story is crucial to fully appreciating the Heaven’s Feel route.

Sakura Matou is initially introduced as a shy and reserved girl who has a crush on Shirou. She comes from a family of mages who specialize in using worms as their magical source, which makes her a victim of physical and mental abuse. Her brother Shinji is her legal guardian but treats her terribly, and her father uses her as a vessel for his experiments. Sakura’s situation is tragic, and it’s difficult not to sympathize with her.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Sakura is not just a helpless victim. She has her own powers as a mage, which she has kept hidden from everyone, including Shirou. She also has a deep connection to the Holy Grail War, which is slowly revealed throughout the trilogy.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Heaven’s Feel route is how it delves into the inner workings of the Holy Grail War and the true nature of the Grail itself. Without giving away too many spoilers, it’s safe to say that the Grail is not what it seems, and its true purpose is far more sinister than anyone realized.

Overall, Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel is a fantastic addition to the Fate/Stay Night franchise. It offers a fresh take on the story, explores new themes and characters, and provides a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.
