The next Star Wars movie will feature The Mandalorian and Grogu

Lucasfilm has officially lifted the curtain on a new Star Wars movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” marking a significant venture into the cinematic realm for the beloved characters. This exciting announcement came on Tuesday, revealing that production is slated to commence in 2024, sparking speculation that the movie could potentially hit theaters in 2025 or 2026.

What adds to the intrigue is that “The Mandalorian & Grogu” seems to be stepping in as a surrogate for The Mandalorian season 4, a continuation that had not been formally confirmed at the time of this announcement. The creative force behind the immensely successful series, Jon Favreau, who served as its creator and showrunner, will be taking the directorial helm for the movie. Joining him in the production is Dave Filoni, the Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, who has collaborated closely with Favreau over recent years.

While the specific narrative details of the film are shrouded in mystery, the inclusion of key characters like Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, and Ahsoka, along with visits to the pivotal planet of Mandalore in the series, suggests the potential for an epic team-up adventure in the movie. However, an interesting twist emerges as reports suggest Filoni is concurrently working on a New Republic movie set after the events of Ahsoka season 2, raising questions about the interconnected narrative threads within the Star Wars universe.

Lucasfilm’s broader theatrical slate encompasses the previously disclosed Rey movie, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and a project helmed by James Mangold, delving into the origins of the Jedi. While these revelations are undoubtedly thrilling for Star Wars enthusiasts, the status of other projects, such as Kevin Feige’s movie and those from directors Shawn Levy, Taika Waititi, and Rian Johnson, remains uncertain, as they were conspicuously absent from the official announcement. Polygon has reached out to Lucasfilm for clarification on the current status of these projects, adding an air of anticipation to the overall landscape of Star Wars cinematic endeavors.
