The Marvels, the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), faces ongoing challenges at the domestic box office, breaking another negative franchise record. Serving as a direct sequel to Captain Marvel, the film stars Brie Larson alongside Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). It initially recorded the MCU’s lowest opening weekend, debuting with $46.1 million, and followed with the steepest week 2 drop in franchise history, plummeting by a notable 78.1%.
This release comes amidst a period of varying box office performances for MCU films. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a previous Phase 5 installment, achieved success as the sixteenth highest-grossing movie in the cinematic franchise, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the film preceding The Marvels, experienced the franchise’s worst week 2 drop before The Marvels surpassed this record.
Although Quantumania remained in the Top 5 for six weeks, The Marvels, in its three-week descent, falls short of the MCU’s historical box office peaks. Many MCU movies have traditionally dominated the charts for multiple weeks, with Spider-Man: No Way Home, for instance, maintaining its position for 16 weeks and reaching the seventh-highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.
The unique circumstances surrounding The Marvels, such as the unavailability of the cast due to the 2023 actors strike coinciding with the movie’s release, contribute to uncertainties about the future trends in Phase 5. The following movies in the lineup, including Deadpool 3 and Captain America: Brave New World, may either continue this trend of fluctuating box office performance or deviate from the perceived downward slide.
In week 3, The Marvels continues to set negative records, earning an estimated 5-day total of $8.8 million over Thanksgiving weekend. Despite ranking sixth on the box office chart below Thanksgiving, Trolls Band Together, Wish, Napoleon, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, it becomes the fastest MCU movie to exit the domestic Top 5, outpacing The Incredible Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Captain America: The First Avenger, each of which took four weeks to fall from the Top 5. The question arises: Is The Marvels an isolated blip, or does it signal the beginning of a broader trend in the MCU’s box office performance?
