The Sword Art Online franchise has become a beloved phenomenon among fans of light novels, manga, anime, and video games. The original story began as a web novel written by Reki Kawahara, which was published on his website in 2002. The light novel series was then launched in 2009 and has since become a top seller in the light novel market, published under Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko label.
The Sword Art Online series tells the story of a young man named Kirito who, along with thousands of other players, becomes trapped in a virtual reality MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) called Sword Art Online. The players discover that they are unable to log out of the game, and that if they die in the game, they will also die in real life. Kirito, a skilled gamer and beta tester of the game, takes on the challenge of clearing all 100 floors of the game’s tower in order to escape with his life.
The series has expanded over time to include spin-off stories such as Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, which follows a different set of characters, and Sword Art Online Progressive, a retelling of the original “Aincrad” arc with additional details and plot points. The franchise has also been adapted into a multi-season anime series, anime movies, and video games.
One of the latest developments in the Sword Art Online universe is the “Unital Ring” arc, which was introduced in the light novel series in December 2018 with the release of the 21st volume, subtitled “Unital Ring I.” The story takes place one year after Kirito and Asuna’s return from the Underworld, with Alice joining them in the physical world. The three are suddenly thrown into a new game called Unital Ring, which is a survival MMO that combines all VRMMOs created with the Seed program. Kirito finds himself stripped down to his underwear and must survive in the new game under desperate circumstances.
Masato Kanetsuki’s manga adaptation of the “Unital Ring” arc has just begun serialization with the June 2023 issue of KADOKAWA’s Monthly Shonen Ace, which was released in Japan on April 26. Fans of the series will be eagerly awaiting the manga’s release and anticipating how it will adapt the popular storyline.
