Studio Ghibli’s influence on the visually stunning aesthetics of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender, a beloved animated series, owes part of its visual brilliance to the influence of Studio Ghibli, as explained by co-creator Bryan Konietzko. The show, which captivated a wide audience with its Asian-inspired fantasy world, distinctive character and location designs, and breathtaking backdrops, drew inspiration from Studio Ghibli’s artistic approach.

In a recent interview, Konietzko shed light on the creative process behind Avatar: The Last Airbender, revealing the impact of a rule established by Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki. The rule emphasized the importance of starting with handmade art, even for projects that would eventually incorporate 3D elements. Konietzko, who had a passion for landscape oil painting, saw an opportunity in co-creating Avatar to showcase his love for creating stunning background paintings and epic landscapes. He highlighted that the majority of the show’s storyboards were meticulously drawn on paper, staying true to the traditional art form.

While the original series predominantly adhered to traditional animation techniques, its sequel series, The Legend of Korra, embraced a fusion of traditional and computer-generated imagery. The use of CGI became more prominent, particularly in the pro-bending arena and during later seasons featuring the impressive mecha-suits of Hiroshi Sato.

Studio Ghibli, renowned for its mastery of storytelling and visual artistry in anime and animated features like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro, has long been regarded as a pioneering force in the animation industry. Its influence on Avatar: The Last Airbender helped elevate the series to new heights, capturing the hearts of viewers worldwide.

In a significant development, Konietzko and co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino assumed the roles of chief creative officers at Avatar Studios in 2021. Avatar Studios has embarked on expanding the Avatar universe through various projects, including the highly anticipated feature film centered on the adult Gaang. The film is being animated by Flying Bark Productions, the same animation team behind the popular Disney+ series What If…?.

Although specific details about Avatar Studios’ upcoming projects remain under wraps, there have been reports suggesting a new animation style incorporating CGI may be utilized. However, no official confirmation has been provided, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further announcements.

Rumors have circulated regarding potential titles for the adult Gaang film, with names like Avatar: The Last Airbender – Hidden Kingdom or Echoes and Aftershocks gaining attention. Yet, Paramount, Nickelodeon, and Avatar Studios have not officially confirmed any titles. Similarly, while reports suggest actor Dante Basco may reprise his role as Prince Zuko in the film, no official confirmation has been made.
