Shrek 5 May Arrive in 2025, Reports Suggest

A fifth installment of the Shrek movie series is currently in development by DreamWorks and Illumination.

The potential release of Shrek 5 in 2025 was briefly mentioned by an NBCUniversal employee on their LinkedIn profile before being removed. This update follows the revelation in April by Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, that negotiations were underway to bring back the original cast, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey, for the first Shrek film since 2010. (Two spin-off films, Puss in Boots in 2011 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022, were created based on the Shrek franchise.)

Meledandri expressed his commitment to rejuvenating Shrek and other DreamWorks franchises when NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016. As the mastermind behind successful franchises like Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets, Sing, and the hit Super Mario Bros. Movie co-produced with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, Meledandri stated that the actors were enthusiastic about reprising their roles from the last Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, in 2010.

The approach to the new Shrek movie is similar to how they handled the Super Mario Bros. Movie, respecting the core elements cherished by audiences while introducing new storylines and characters to explore fresh territory. The original cast remains a vital part of this process.

Since Puss in Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderas, was given his own successful spin-off, Meledandri suggested that Donkey might star in a Shrek spin-off, especially after Eddie Murphy expressed his willingness to do a Donkey movie and another Shrek film.

Shrek, based on William Steig’s book, was a global box office success in 2001, earning nearly $500 million. Shrek 2, released in 2004, was once the highest-grossing animated movie in history and remains the studio’s most lucrative film with a global earnings of $935 million. Two subsequent sequels, Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010), earned $807 million and $756 million worldwide, respectively
