“One Shonen Jump Series Brings Hunter x Hunter’s Nen System to Life in Surprising Manga”
In a unique twist, a Shonen Jump series has incorporated elements of Hunter x Hunter’s Nen system into its storyline. Akane-banashi, written by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Moue, pays homage to Nen by introducing a version of it into the real world. The manga follows Akane, an aspiring storyteller in the Rakugo world, a traditional Japanese performance art. While Rakugo and Nen are vastly different, the series cleverly draws comparisons between the two.
In Chapter 58, Akane’s senior, Maikeru, advises her on enhancing her performances by understanding her personal style. To classify her style, Maikeru introduces Akane to the concept of “Nin,” which is akin to the essence of an actor in Kabuki Theater. Nin consists of six attributes that Rakugo performers can excel in, allowing them to craft unique performances that suit their strengths, similar to Nen users in Hunter x Hunter.
Akane-banashi’s incorporation of “Nin” parallels the structure of Nen in Hunter x Hunter, which is also composed of six attributes that combine to create distinctive abilities. While Akane-banashi’s Nin doesn’t grant magical powers like Nen, it enhances the performers’ abilities, making it akin to a special ability. This integration of Nen-like characteristics into a more realistic manga like Akane-banashi showcases the influence of Hunter x Hunter on modern manga power systems.
Unlike other Shonen Jump manga that often feature complex and fantastical abilities, Akane-banashi stands out by paying homage to Nen in a more direct manner. While series like Jujutsu Kaisen may possess extravagant powers, they sometimes lack the comprehensible framework that underlies Nen. Akane-banashi breaks this barrier by humorously referencing Hunter x Hunter and incorporating a fantastical power system into its real-world setting.
Chapter 58 of Akane-banashi can be read on Viz Media.
