Sailor Moon meets Harvest Moon in this ’90s farm sim successor

“Fields of Mistria captures the essence of the 1990s in the most delightful way.

Among my ever-growing collection of “Stardew Valley, but” games on my wishlist, I have made space for another one: Fields of Mistria, a game that combines the charm of Stardew Valley with the magical world of Sailor Moon. Although still in development, this enchanting farming and life simulation has already won me over with its character designs inspired by ’90s anime.

Fields of Mistria proudly presents itself as a spiritual successor to the farm-sim RPGs of the late ’90s and beyond, specifically drawing inspiration from Harvest Moon games, which were a significant influence on the beloved Stardew Valley we know today. The chunky cow designs pay homage to the original SNES Harvest Moon, while the characters’ proportions and small mouths evoke nostalgic memories of the magical girl anime from that era, reminiscent of the sailor scouts.

While ticking all the boxes of a modern farm life simulation, Fields of Mistria offers farming, fishing, a town in need of restoration following an earthquake, animal breeding, seasonal changes, festivals, and even marriage. Notably, it also features an underground cave system with combat and puzzles. Combat is often an aspect that sets Stardew Valley apart from other games in the farm simulation genre, so it’s exciting to see Mistria embrace it.

The developers have unveiled nine out of the total of twelve marriage candidates so far. You can find more information about them on the Fields of Mistria website, and their designs exude the iconic ’90s anime style with colorful hair and striking hand poses. Some characters even sport cloaks, while one rocks the fashionable ‘jacket draped over shoulders without the arms on’ look – a true nostalgia trip.

The magical girl theme extends beyond character designs in Fields of Mistria. The game allows you to acquire magical abilities that make your life on the farm easier, such as summoning rain to water your crops.

Although Fields of Mistria has yet to announce a release date, I am hopeful that it will be the next piece of exciting news following the reveal of the final three marriage candidates. In the meantime, you can find and add the game to your wishlist on Steam.”
