Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Inuyasha, has become a French knight

Rumiko Takahashi, the renowned manga artist and creator of popular series such as Inuyasha, Maison Ikkoku, Urusei Yatsura, and Ranma 1/2, was recently bestowed with a prestigious honor by the French Minister of Culture. On Thursday, she was invited to the residence of the French ambassador to Japan for a ceremony to receive the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, also known as Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Established in 1957, this award is conferred upon individuals who have made remarkable achievements in the fields of art and literature, be it in their creation or popularization within France or around the world. With this honor, Takahashi now joins the ranks of other accomplished manga creators such as Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), Leiji Matsumoto (Galaxy Express 999), Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), and Go Nagai (Devilman), who have also been recognized with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres award.

In a statement released by her publisher, Shogakukan, Takahashi expressed her gratitude for the honor, saying, “I am grateful for this tremendous honor. It gives me great joy that my stories, which are based on everyday life in Japan, are enjoyed by the people of France.”

Despite her impressive accomplishments and achievements, Takahashi is not one to rest on her laurels. When asked about how this award might influence her future work, she replied, “I will take this award as encouragement and continue working hard at drawing manga.” This attitude is consistent with Takahashi’s reputation for being a diligent and dedicated artist who has consistently produced high-quality manga throughout her career.

Takahashi’s work has gained worldwide acclaim for its ability to blend humor, romance, and fantasy into compelling stories that have resonated with audiences for decades. She has been credited with pioneering the magical girl genre, and her manga have been adapted into successful anime series, films, and video games.
