Review: ‘Migration’ – A Feathered Adventure or Flying Road Trip?

In “Migration,” an animated feature penned by Mike White, whose credits include the satirical HBO series “The White Lotus,” audiences are introduced to a world where ducks aren’t quite as fearless as their animated counterparts like Donald and Daffy. Voiced by Kumail Nanjiani, Mack Mallard, the patriarch of the Mallard family, initially appears to be a confident storyteller, regaling his children with tales of the safety of their pond. However, beneath his outward bravado lies a deep-seated fear of the unknown.

When Mack’s wife, Pam, voiced by Elizabeth Banks, encourages their children, Dax and Gwen, to embrace their curiosity and venture beyond the safety of their pond, the family embarks on a journey that takes them far from their familiar surroundings. Along for the ride is Uncle Dan, portrayed by Danny DeVito, adding a touch of comedic relief and wisdom to the group dynamic.

As the Mallards navigate their way through the skies, they encounter a series of challenges that test their courage and resilience. From narrowly escaping the clutches of menacing herons to facing off against a confrontational chef in a bustling Manhattan restaurant, each obstacle forces the family to confront their fears and rely on each other for support.

Directed by Benjamin Renner, “Migration” seamlessly blends White’s signature wit and humor with stunning animation and a talented voice cast. Awkwafina lends her voice to a tough New York City pigeon, while Keegan-Michael Key brings to life a captive parrot, adding depth and personality to the ensemble.

At its core, “Migration” is more than just a lighthearted adventure—it’s a story about the importance of facing our fears, embracing change, and finding strength in the bonds of family. White’s vegan perspective subtly influences the film’s themes, sparking a conversation about the ethics of consumption and the impact of our choices on the world around us.

Despite its brisk pace and moments of humor, “Migration” occasionally feels labored, struggling to capture the effortless charm of classic animated comedies. However, with its stellar voice cast, heartfelt storytelling, and timely themes, it’s sure to resonate with audiences of all ages, reminding us that sometimes the greatest adventures are the ones that take us outside of our comfort zones.
