Review: Illumination’s ‘Migration’ is a Charming Duck Family Adventure with Modest Soaring

Seeking family-friendly entertainment this season? Look no further than the whimsical and heartwarming adventure of migrating ducks in “Migration.”

Before delving into the film’s bird inaccuracies, the animated feature, directed by Benjamin Renner, centers on a New England-based mallard duck family led by cautious father Mack (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) and adventurous mother Pam (voiced by Elizabeth Banks). The family dynamics, including teenage duck Dax (voiced by Caspar Jennings) and duckling Gwen (voiced by Tresi Gazal), provide a charming backdrop.

While the film may not align with bird facts for the discerning viewer, its primary goal is to captivate a younger audience with its cuteness, humor, and a runtime of 82 minutes. Mack’s aversion to change has kept the family rooted in the same pond for generations, but when a migrating group extols the virtues of heading to Jamaica for the winter, the family’s desire for adventure is ignited.

Uncle Dan (voiced by Danny DeVito) plays a pivotal role in encouraging Mack to embrace the migration, setting the stage for a humorous and adventurous journey. As the Mallards head north instead of south, the film introduces entertaining elements, including a detour to New York City. However, once in the big city, “Migration” follows a more predictably plotted course.

The Mallards encounter challenges, quirky characters, and a wordless, villainous chef, reminiscent of the Illumination mold. The colorful animation, sprinkled with realistic details, keeps the film visually appealing. The Mallards form alliances with characters like Chump (voiced by Awkwafina) and Delroy the parrot (voiced by Keegan Michael-Key) on their way to Jamaica.

Despite the film’s silliness and occasional strangeness, it maintains a sweet and funny tone, making viewers genuinely care about the odd yet endearing duck family. With zany adventures, a duck farm inspired by “Chicken Run,” and encounters with amusing characters like Googoo (voiced by David Mitchell), “Migration” delivers family-friendly entertainment at a genial pace.
