I’ve been watching the anime series “Soul Eater” based on Atsushi Ōkubo’s manga. It’s a shonen series with a female protagonist named Maka Albarn, which is a refreshing aspect of the show. However, I was disappointed by the still image used to represent the series on Hulu, as it features other characters instead of Maka.
The story revolves around students at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA) in Death City, Nevada. They are divided into meisters and weapons, with the goal of hunting down evil souls. The main characters include Maka Albarn and her scythe Soul Eater, Black Star and his shadow weapon Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with his twin pistols, Liz and Patty Thompson.
The opening and ending sequences of the show always feature Maka, Black Star, and Death the Kid together, highlighting their importance. So, it was frustrating to see a still image that erases Maka as the lead character. This choice goes against the intention of Atsushi Ōkubo, who deliberately made Maka the protagonist and aimed for gender equality among the leads.
The prevalence of male-dominated shonen series makes Maka’s role as a female lead significant. Ōkubo wanted to stand out by featuring a female hero and creating pairs of opposite-sex characters to achieve gender balance. However, it’s essential to note that having more female characters doesn’t automatically guarantee quality storytelling.
In “Soul Eater,” Maka is portrayed as a strong and emotionally nuanced protagonist, displaying both determination and empathy. Her storyline, particularly her relationship with Crona, showcases her depth as a character. Therefore, it’s crucial for streaming services like Hulu to accurately represent Maka as the lead character when promoting the series.
As a fan, I hope for a reboot of the series that follows the manga’s ending, similar to what happened with “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.” Until then, I’ll eagerly await new manga releases, cherishing the time I have in the world of “Soul Eater.”
