Pixar’s higher production costs compared to other studios, such as Disney and DreamWorks, have prompted questions from readers. Contrary to common belief, Pixar president Jim Morris clarified in a Variety interview that the visual and technical complexity of their films is not the primary reason for the disparity.
Morris highlighted a key factor: Pixar produces its films in the United States, unlike many competitors who opt for offshore work in countries like Canada or France. This distinction, coupled with Pixar’s non-unionized status compared to DreamWorks, leads to higher labor costs in California. Despite this, unionization is not the sole driver of increased production costs.
Another contributing factor is Pixar’s comprehensive accounting, which includes executive salaries and other expenses excluded by some studios in their reported budgets. Morris emphasized that when Pixar discloses a budget, it encompasses the entire company’s operational costs.
Additionally, Morris acknowledged the visual complexity of certain Pixar films, citing “Elemental” as an example. The inclusion of characters with visual effects, such as volumetric simulations for fire and water characters, demanded substantial processing power. Elemental’s unique technical requirements resulted in Pixar building a supercomputer infrastructure with a record 151,000 cores, contributing to the film’s higher costs.
As for the financial viability of Pixar films, it varies. While “Lightyear” faced financial challenges, “Elemental” demonstrated an unconventional box office trajectory, turning profitable. Morris anticipates Elemental to exceed break-even theatrically, considering additional revenue streams from streaming, theme parks, and consumer products.
Addressing the future, Morris acknowledged the ongoing question of whether Pixar films will become cheaper. While committed to keeping production in California, he noted efforts to reduce film costs, with Elemental representing a temporary increase due to its technical complexity. Disney CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the company’s focus on “reducing the cost per title” across its upcoming films.
