“Cartoon Character Murals Removed at Child Asylum Center After Minister’s Order
The Home Office has confirmed the erasure of murals portraying cartoon characters at a Kent-based asylum center for unaccompanied children. The removal was reportedly ordered by Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick in April due to concerns that the characters, including Baloo from The Jungle Book and Mickey Mouse, conveyed an overly welcoming tone. The decision prompted staff to express opposition to what they deemed a ‘cruel order.’ Despite resistance, the murals were painted over on Tuesday.
Mr. Jenrick’s directive extended beyond the murals, as he also instructed the removal of vibrant welcome signs, aiming to redefine the center as a “law enforcement environment” rather than a “welcome center.” The move has sparked backlash, with cartoonist Guy Venables deeming it ‘evil,’ suggesting the government is catering to their less discerning constituents.
Venables revealed that numerous respected cartoonists offered to repaint the mural, but due to sensitivities around the issue and limited access to the child-centered area, they have postponed this effort. However, they remain open to aiding in other projects, such as crafting picture cards for non-English-speaking children.
Shadow Immigration Minister Stephen Kinnock criticized the decision, dismissing the notion that removing murals and entertainment would deter asylum seekers. He condemned the government’s approach as callous and emblematic of a disarrayed administration.
The Home Office defended its focus on ensuring children’s safety and securing placements with local authorities. It reiterated its determination to curtail illegal immigration and thwart human smugglers, pointing to the introduction of legislation for the detention and prompt removal of illegal arrivals.
Beyond the murals, the Kent facility boasts enhanced amenities, such as larger, more comfortable interview rooms, outdoor spaces, prayer areas, a more extensive reception zone, and heightened security measures.”
