Nintendo and Illumination collaborate on a new animated Mario Bros. movie

On the auspicious occasion of Mario Day, celebrated annually on March 10th (or Mar10, cleverly resembling the character’s name), Nintendo and Illumination Studios have delighted fans by unveiling plans for another animated Super Mario Bros. movie. This revelation came as a pleasant surprise to many, especially since expectations were primarily focused on announcements related to the Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door remake. However, the unveiling of this new cinematic endeavor has undoubtedly stolen the spotlight.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the esteemed creator of the Mario franchise, took to the official Nintendo Twitter account to share the exciting news with legions of eager fans. In his announcement, Miyamoto revealed that Nintendo and Illumination are once again joining forces to craft a “new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” The collaboration between these two powerhouse entities promises an exhilarating cinematic experience that will transport audiences back to the beloved Mushroom Kingdom.

Interestingly, while Miyamoto and Illumination’s CEO, Chris Meledandri, refrained from explicitly labeling the project as a sequel, they notably avoided the moniker “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.” This deliberate choice suggests that the forthcoming film may offer a fresh perspective on the iconic franchise, rather than simply continuing where its predecessor left off. This enigmatic approach has sparked fervent speculation among fans, fueling anticipation for what surprises may lie in store.

Meledandri further revealed that work on the new film is already well underway, with the same directors and animation studio responsible for the first movie onboard for the sequel. This continuity ensures that the sequel will maintain the same level of quality and creativity that endeared audiences to its predecessor.

Despite the early stage of development, Meledandri couldn’t resist sharing a tantalizing detail about the project, mentioning that the creative team is currently storyboarding “new locations.” This snippet of information hints at the possibility of exploring previously unseen corners of the Mushroom Kingdom, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming film.

While specific plot details remain shrouded in mystery, speculation abounds regarding potential narrative directions. One prevailing theory posits that the sequel may focus on Yoshi, a beloved character who was subtly teased in the credits of the first movie. However, until official details are unveiled, fans can only speculate and eagerly await further announcements.

Despite the lack of concrete information, the confirmation of a sequel is hardly surprising given the monumental success of the first Super Mario Bros. movie. With a global box office gross rivaling that of animated juggernauts like Frozen 2 and The Lion King live-action remake, the film’s commercial triumph solidified its status as a cultural phenomenon.

As anticipation continues to mount, fans can rest assured that Nintendo and Illumination are committed to delivering another unforgettable cinematic adventure set in the whimsical world of Super Mario Bros. With the release date set for April 3, 2026, audiences have ample time to immerse themselves in speculation and excitement leading up to the highly anticipated sequel.
