New Batman film may fulfill scrapped Nightwing plans in DCU

DC had initially planned to produce a standalone Nightwing movie as part of the DCEU, but unfortunately, this project was scrapped. However, with the emergence of the DCU, there’s a fresh opportunity to resurrect and fulfill these plans. As the DCEU came to an end, several planned projects, including the Nightwing movie, were left behind. Yet, the DCU now presents a chance to pick up where the previous cinematic universe left off, particularly with regards to Nightwing’s story in “The Brave and the Bold.”

The demise of the DCEU led to the cancellation of numerous projects, but it also paved the way for new opportunities within the DCU. While some characters like Aquaman, Blue Beetle, and Black Adam managed to receive cinematic debuts during the DCEU era, others, such as Nightwing, were sidelined. However, the upcoming slate of DCU movies suggests a revitalization of Batman’s world, offering a chance to revisit and realize plans for Nightwing.

Initially announced in 2017, the DCEU’s Nightwing movie was intended as a spin-off of Ben Affleck’s Batman solo movie, teasing a storyline involving an older Bruce Wayne and his encounters with Joe Manganiello’s Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke. Despite these promising beginnings, the project languished in development limbo for years, eventually succumbing to the changing tides within the DCEU.

As the DCEU transitioned into the DCU under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, it was confirmed that the Nightwing movie would not be part of the new direction. Instead, the focus shifted to “The Brave and the Bold,” a Batman-centric film featuring Bruce Wayne and his son Damian as Robin. While details about this movie remain scarce, it presents an opportunity to incorporate Nightwing into the narrative and fulfill the abandoned plans from the DCEU era.

Dick Grayson, the original Robin who later adopts the Nightwing persona, holds a significant place in Batman’s world. As the leader of the Teen Titans and a beloved character among fans, Nightwing’s absence from the live-action realm is notable. With Damian Wayne’s Robin already confirmed for “The Brave and the Bold,” it’s plausible that Nightwing will also play a role in the storyline, further expanding the Bat Family’s presence in the DCU.

Nightwing’s vibrant personality and distinct approach to crime-fighting offer a refreshing contrast to Batman’s darker persona. In a cinematic landscape dominated by brooding superheroes, Nightwing’s lightheartedness and charisma could inject new energy into the DCU. As the DCU seeks to carve out its own identity separate from the DCEU, Nightwing stands poised to become a prominent figure and potentially lead his own solo movie in the future.
