Steven DeKnight, the former showrunner of Netflix’s Marvel Daredevil series, has criticized the upcoming Disney+ series as an “old Disney scam” aimed at depriving the original creatives of their rightful financial compensation. The Disney+ series, titled “Daredevil: Born Again,” focuses on Charlie Cox’s Daredevil (Matt Murdock) and features Vince D’Onofrio reprising his role as Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin.
DeKnight’s comments came in response to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by a grip named Thomas, a member of the IATSE union representing crew workers in the film, TV, and stage industry. Thomas argued that renaming the series is a scheme to reset guild contract terms to Season 1 levels. DeKnight agreed, stating that it’s an “old Disney scam” designed to reset contract terms and needs to be addressed by all guilds and unions.
While DeKnight expressed his excitement to see Cox and D’Onofrio reprise their iconic roles, he criticized the notion that this is a complete reboot that allows Disney to avoid compensating the original creatives, labeling it as corporate maneuvering.
The cast of “Daredevil: Born Again” also includes Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt, Michael Gandolfini, Arty Froushan, Nikki M. James, and Jon Bernthal returning as the Punisher.
Charlie Cox previously discussed the upcoming reboot, emphasizing the need for it to be different and cater to a more mature audience while acknowledging that it may not be as gory as the previous series.
“Daredevil: Born Again” had commenced filming in and around New York but had to suspend production due to the WGA strike three months into its planned eight-month shoot for an 18-episode season on Disney+.
