My First Experience Watching ‘Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition

On New Year’s Day, my local Cinemark unexpectedly offered a 6 o’clock screening of the extended edition of the first Lord of the Rings film. Intrigued by the buzz surrounding it, I decided to give it a chance despite my prior indifference. Although I’ve been exposed to fragments of the series over the years through family viewings, online clips, and memes, I never felt compelled to fully engage with it until now. Opting for the extended edition on my initial viewing was a deliberate choice, one that I ultimately found rewarding.

Despite occasional moments of what could be considered cheesy lore and world-building, I found the overall experience delightful and captivating. The endearing characters, stunning set designs, and thrilling action sequences made for an enjoyable ride. Surprisingly, I found myself genuinely invested in the characters and their journey, a sentiment I hadn’t expected given my prior familiarity with them through pop culture references.

Watching the extended edition, I couldn’t fathom which scenes were omitted from the theatrical cut, as everything seemed integral to the story. Learning about the removal of the gift-giving scene between the Fellowship and Galadriel left me puzzled, as it felt significant and added depth to the narrative.

Despite its lengthy runtime, the extended edition didn’t feel burdensome or tedious; rather, it remained engaging from start to finish. Viewing it on the big screen added an extra layer of immersion, particularly given its age.

The idyllic setting of the Shire left a lasting impression on me, offering a welcome contrast to the darker themes prevalent throughout the film. Inspired by its simplicity and tranquility, I’m tempted to embrace a cottage-core lifestyle of gardening, baking, and leisurely pursuits.

Additionally, my perception of Aragorn underwent a significant shift, as I now understand the hype surrounding his character.

Having completed Fellowship of the Ring, I eagerly anticipate watching the subsequent installments. Should I opt for the extended editions of those films as well?
