Minions Studio’s Latest Animated Film Faces Worst Box Office Debut Yet

The newest animated offering from Illumination Entertainment, renowned for its blockbuster franchises like Despicable Me and Minions, has debuted to the studio’s most lackluster opening weekend yet.

Titled “Migration,” this latest venture follows the misadventures of a family of ducks navigating the bustling streets of New York City en route to their intended destination, Jamaica. Boasting an impressive voice cast featuring the talents of Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, Carol Kane, and Danny DeVito, anticipation was high for this avian escapade.

However, despite the star-studded lineup and the studio’s track record of box office successes, “Migration” failed to take flight in its opening weekend. According to reports from Deadline, the film is expected to land at the third spot on the domestic box office charts, trailing behind the enduring success of “Wonka” and the latest DC Comics installment, “Aquaman 2.” Projections indicate a modest 3-day debut total of $12.3 million, with a slightly improved 4-day Christmas weekend gross of $17 million. Nevertheless, even this extended holiday total would mark “Migration” as Illumination’s lowest-grossing opening weekend among its repertoire of 14 animated features, surpassing the previous low set by 2021’s “Sing 2,” which garnered $22.3 million in its debut.

While the underwhelming box office performance may raise eyebrows given Illumination’s history of blockbuster hits, there are silver linings for “Migration.” Despite its lukewarm domestic reception, critical reviews for the film have been relatively positive, boasting a commendable 69% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, international markets are yet to be factored in, potentially bolstering the film’s overall earnings and inching it closer to recouping its $72 million production budget.

Nevertheless, even if “Migration” fails to soar to the financial heights of its predecessors, Illumination Entertainment remains on solid ground. The studio’s monumental success in 2023, spearheaded by the record-breaking performance of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, ensures a cushion against any potential setbacks. With a robust slate of upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated “Despicable Me 4” and sequels to “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Sing,” Illumination is poised for continued success, regardless of the initial stumbling block encountered by “Migration.
