Minion-costumed man robs convenience store, mimicking Despicable Me

Jonathan Carey, a 47-year-old man residing in Kinnaird Close, Belfast, has been charged with robbery and possessing an offensive weapon following an incident at a Day Today shop on the Antrim Road. The alleged crime involved Carey, dressed in a Minion costume from the Despicable Me movies, forcing a teenage staff member to surrender £250 in cash and cigarettes at knifepoint on October 17.

Carey’s identification and subsequent arrest were facilitated by the circulation of an image on social media, showcasing the suspect in the distinctive Minion outfit during the robbery. According to prosecution counsel Mark Conlon, the 17-year-old shop assistant on duty during the incident was threatened by the masked man.

Further details emerged during court proceedings, revealing that staff from a neighboring retailer identified the Minion-costumed individual from their own premises earlier that evening, albeit without a mask. Carey was taken into custody when he revisited that shop the following day.

Upon searching Carey’s residence, law enforcement discovered a Minion onesie, adding a peculiar detail to the case. In addition to the robbery and offensive weapon charges, Carey faces additional allegations related to the possession of Class B and Class C drugs.

During police interviews, Carey initially claimed memory loss due to Diazepam medication. However, after viewing CCTV footage of the incident, he offered an apology. Defense barrister Luke Curran argued that Carey expressed remorse at the scene and even returned £110 in cash.

Despite the expressions of remorse and the returned money, Mr. Justice Fowler, presiding over the case, denied bail to Carey. The judge emphasized the highly distressing nature of the incident for the 17-year-old shop assistant, highlighting the likelihood of a custodial sentence for a robbery carried out with a mask, a knife, and the distinctive Minion outfit.
