Migration’ Struggles at Box Office Premiere, Fails to Soar

Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks take the lead roles in Illumination’s most recent animated venture, “Migration.”

Despite high expectations, “Migration” has had a disappointing debut at the box office, pulling in only $34 million worldwide. The film, which follows a family of mallards seeking a new home, faced tough competition upon its release, both domestically and internationally. Out of the total earnings, $12 million came from domestic ticket sales, with the remaining $22 million from international markets.

The lackluster performance of “Migration” comes as a surprise, particularly considering Illumination’s recent success with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1 billion globally. However, “Migration” failed to replicate the same level of success, even losing its position as the top-grossing film of 2023 to the summer blockbuster, “Barbie.”

The star-studded voice cast of “Migration” includes Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Danny DeVito, alongside Nanjiani and Banks, who play the roles of Mack and Pam, respectively. Directed by Benjamin Renner and based on a screenplay by Mike White, known for his work on HBO’s “The White Lotus,” the film hoped to capture audiences with its adventurous storyline and talented cast.

Looking ahead, Illumination Studios is pinning its hopes on the upcoming release of “Despicable Me 4” next summer. With Gru and the minions returning for another unpredictable mission, the studio is banking on the franchise’s past success, with the third installment grossing over $1 billion at the box office in 2017. Whether “Despicable Me 4” will revive Illumination’s box office fortunes remains to be seen, but for now, “Migration” must grapple with its underwhelming performance during the holiday season.
