Marvel’s villain team-up avoids a key mistake made in the DCEU’s lowest-rated film

Marvel’s Thunderbolts, akin to DC’s Suicide Squad, offers a unique advantage by sidestepping a significant pitfall that plagued the 2016 Suicide Squad film. Thunderbolts, an upcoming MCU team-up featuring popular anti-heroes and villains, distinguishes itself from its DC counterpart. Unlike the Suicide Squad, Thunderbolts’ members aren’t solely criminals coerced into perilous missions under threat of explosive consequences. Instead, the Thunderbolts tackle assignments with unconventional tactics, focusing on tasks beyond The Avengers’ purview.

Although specific plot details are scant, Thunderbolts boasts an impressive cast, including Yelena Belova, Winter Soldier, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and U.S. Agent. What sets Thunderbolts apart is the familiarity audiences already have with these characters, having encountered them in previous MCU projects as significant villains or allies of the Avengers.

Thunderbolts gains a crucial advantage by avoiding the need for extensive character introductions, a stumbling block for Suicide Squad in 2016. The rushed and clunky opening of Suicide Squad attempted to provide backgrounds, incarcerations, and basic personalities for each villain, resulting in awkward moments like Rick Flag’s introduction of Katana. Fortunately, Thunderbolts can circumvent this issue, relying on viewers’ existing familiarity with the characters from their MCU debuts. While brief background references may be necessary for newcomers, the film can dive straight into action, bypassing prolonged setup.

Furthermore, Thunderbolts benefits from characters like Yelena and Winter Soldier, already embraced by audiences, eliminating the need for forced attempts to make them likable, a challenge faced by Suicide Squad. While a few team members may require additional character development, Marvel can focus on crafting an engaging narrative around its beloved anti-heroes, emphasizing an exciting mission and fostering excellent on-screen chemistry.
