Kung Fu Panda 4’ retained its top spot at the North American box office in its second weekend, bringing in $30 million in ticket sales, as estimated by the studio on Sunday. The franchise, led by Jack Black’s voice, has amassed over $1.9 billion globally since its inception in 2008, spawning various spin-offs.
Playing across 4,067 locations in North America, the fourth installment has already raked in $107.7 million domestically. Despite the arrival of several new movies, including ‘Arthur the King,’ ‘The American Society of Magical Negroes,’ and ‘Love Lies Bleeding,’ established franchises like ‘Dune: Part Two’ remained strong. In its third weekend, ‘Dune: Part Two’ came in a close second with $29.1 million, marking a modest 37% decline from the previous weekend and reaching nearly $500 million worldwide.
‘Arthur the King’ secured third place with $7.5 million, slightly below expectations, but its low production costs and international presales are expected to yield profits. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones and starring Mark Wahlberg, the film recounts the true story of an adventurer bonding with a stray dog during a treacherous trek.
Meanwhile, ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ opened to $2.5 million, offering a pulpy ’80s-set Western thriller, and ‘The American Society of Magical Negroes’ brought in $1.3 million, presenting a satire about a secret society dedicated to easing white lives. Notably, 52% of the audience for ‘The American Society of Magical Negroes’ was Black.
As moviegoers await upcoming releases like ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ the box office landscape remains relatively steady, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. Despite the slower weekend, anticipation is high for the summer movie season and the promising films set to hit theaters.
