Kazuma vs. Subaru: Which Isekai Lead Fits Their World Best?

Subaru Natsuki and Kazuma Satou, protagonists of Re:Zero and KonoSuba respectively, are similar isekai main characters set in different anime. However, the question remains: which one is better suited to thrive in their fantasy world?

Despite the abundance of isekai anime in recent years, KonoSuba and Re:Zero have stood out with their unique styles and beloved characters. Both series revolve around a socially withdrawn Japanese protagonist aspiring to become a hero in their new world.

Although Subaru and Kazuma share a common background and sarcastic humor, their personalities and skill sets differ significantly. As they face challenges and confront formidable adversaries, their encounters sometimes result in harrowing deaths. Which character possesses the attributes to navigate their new fantasy world and overcome the classic trials of being isekai’d?

Subaru from Re:Zero compensates for his weaknesses with unwavering willpower. Having spent his life in Japan, isolated and plagued by depression and feelings of inadequacy, Subaru sees his transportation to the world of Re:Zero as a chance for redemption and self-worth. However, his journey becomes a grueling one, exacerbated by his lack of skills upon arriving in Lugnica. While Subaru exhibits remarkable athleticism for a shut-in, his lack of social awareness and strategic intelligence hinder his ability to form alliances and avoid perilous situations. His pride and desire to win Emilia’s affection lead him down a path filled with death and trauma.

Nevertheless, Subaru’s greatest strengths propel his personal growth beyond his initial limitations. Beneath his bravado and attention-seeking behavior lies genuine compassion for protecting others, coupled with an unyielding determination to persist until his goals are achieved. Throughout Re:Zero, Subaru endures losing limbs, poisoning, and even being cut open and frozen to death, yet he finds a way to press forward and learn from his failures. This resilient attitude and motivation compensate for his initial lack of ability, allowing Subaru to grow in knowledge, skills, and emotional maturity.

In KonoSuba, Kazuma Satou, much like Subaru, spent most of his time at home immersed in gaming. After dying from shock and being given the opportunity by the goddess Aqua to start anew in the fantasy land of Axel, Kazuma reluctantly takes Aqua with him and becomes an adventurer. Alongside fellow outcasts Megumin and Darkness, they navigate their way through the Demon King’s forces to ultimately defeat him.

While Kazuma lacks special skills or talents, he possesses an incredibly high luck stat and moderately high intelligence. This combination enables him to devise unconventional plans that surprisingly succeed. Kazuma often complains about his party members’ ineptitude but genuinely cares about his friends and is willing to defend and fight for them. Although he has negative traits such as perverted tendencies and laziness, these aspects serve more as comedic elements in KonoSuba rather than obstacles for Kazuma’s character development. With his social awareness, Kazuma can interact with people and understand their expectations, leading him towards success, even if he does not always follow the conventional path.

From an initial perspective, Kazuma is better equipped to adapt to the challenges and hardships of a new life in a fantasy world. He possesses slightly better social skills, higher overall intelligence, and the fortunate advantage of luck, which frequently places him in advantageous situations. In contrast, Subaru struggles with even basic decision-making, often making a fool of himself or finding himself in life-threatening circumstances due to his lack of luck.

Moreover, Subaru grapples with more emotional problems compared to Kazuma. While Kazuma’s occasional laziness lands him in trouble, he lacks the same level of pride and inferiority complex that continuously ensnare Subaru in Re:Zero Season 1. Kazuma does not idealize or obsess over his party members in the same way Subaru does for Emilia. For instance, Kazuma would never find himself in a situation like Subaru’s embarrassing throne room scene in Re:Zero, where Subaru’s pride is put on the line in front of important officials in Lugnica. Kazuma possesses a keen awareness of his companions’ flaws and manages to avoid similar predicaments.

However, Subaru’s self-driven motivation allows him to surpass his failures in a way that Kazuma does not. While Kazuma’s primary goal is to live a comfortable life and is only pushed out of his dream by his companions’ ambitions, Subaru seeks self-improvement and aspires to become a hero worthy of recognition. This aspiration enables Subaru to overcome the terrible deaths and agonizing experiences he endures throughout Re:Zero Season 1. While Kazuma also faces his fair share of deaths, each one makes him more hesitant to continue, and he is occasionally compelled to return to life by his party. If Kazuma’s isekai world were as gruesome as Subaru’s, it’s likely he would try to escape further suffering by fleeing to a different country.

Ultimately, Subaru’s story of personal growth and conquering his greatest flaws makes him a suitable protagonist for a more serious anime like Re:Zero, while Kazuma’s miserable personality and fortunate ability to navigate outlandish situations in comedic ways make him a better fit for the lighthearted comedy of KonoSuba. Although Kazuma possesses more general skills that make him a stronger starting character in an isekai fantasy world, Subaru’s willpower and determination to protect those he cares about make him a stronger choice when there is a tangible goal to be accomplished within an isekai narrative.
