Is the Chimera Ant Arc in Hunter X Hunter Underappreciated?

Is the Chimera Ant Arc in Hunter X Hunter deserving of the negative reception it has received from some fans? Over the years, this arc has been heavily criticized and even labeled as the worst arc in shonen history. Some viewers felt that it diminished the show’s quality and resembled a filler arc rather than a pivotal part of the series.

However, recent articles have emerged defending the arc and highlighting its brilliance. Perhaps a more balanced perspective is needed, one that acknowledges both its strengths and the aspects that contributed to fans’ dissatisfaction.

The arc begins when Gon and Killua, having completed Greed Island, join Kite in investigating the dangerous Chimera Ants, as part of Ging’s plan. The narrative also delves into the perspective of the Chimera Ant Queen, which some viewers found unnecessary and prolonged.

One of the main complaints about this arc is the extensive time devoted to developing the Chimera Ants. Many characters were introduced but didn’t play significant roles later on, resulting in a slow-paced narrative that left little to appreciate about them. This gave the arc a feeling akin to a filler arc until the introduction of Neferpitou.

Another point of contention was the unbalanced power levels. Granting the Chimera Ants unprecedented strength compared to what had been seen in the series so far didn’t sit well with many fans. However, this decision served to expand the world of Hunter X Hunter and introduce a formidable threat that required the intervention of Chairman Netero and other top-level hunters.

While the pacing of Gon and Killua’s training with Palm and Biscuit, as well as their duels against Knuckle and Shoot, was criticized for being slow, the need for their power-up was understandable. Fans were eager to see the pro hunters infiltrating the Chimera Ants’ kingdom and witness Gon and Killua’s growth, but patience was required to endure the prolonged training sessions.

On a positive note, the arc featured memorable battles that showcased significant changes in the power system. The Hunters launched an assault on the Palace with the assistance of Killua’s grandfather, Zeno. Netero’s final attack, Killua’s new power, and Gon’s berserk transformation in his pursuit of vengeance for Kite provided thrilling and diverse battle sequences. The Royal Guard’s scheming against the King’s wishes added intrigue and there were moments of heartbreak as well.

An essential element to discuss is the character Komugi, who became a divisive factor among fans’ opinions of the Chimera Ant Arc. Her presence as a skilled board game player disrupted the conflict between humanity and the Chimera Ants. The relationship that developed between Komugi and the Chimera Ant King showcased a change in the King’s personality, as he grew to respect and admire her. Some viewed her role as a convenient solution or a deus ex machina, but others recognized the deeper message about human nature and the power of connection.

It is important to view the Chimera Ant Arc as a buildup saga that sets the stage for the main story involving Ging, the Freecs family, and the Dark Continent. Netero’s death leads to Ging’s introduction and reveals important figures in the Hunter Association. The arc also introduces the concept of the Dark Continent, the origin of the Chimera Ants, and Killua’s sister, who is connected to that mysterious place. Moreover, it culminates in the highly anticipated father and son reunion between Gon and Ging, where Gon learns about his father’s desire to explore the uncharted world.

Thanks to the events of the Chimera Ant Arc, Hunter X Hunter takes an unexpected turn and shifts the focus of the main story to a completely different and intriguing plotline. While it may not be considered the best arc in the series, it certainly has its merits and serves as a testament to Togashi’s exceptional world-building skills.
