Invincible creator Robert Kirkman appears to have provided confirmation regarding Steven Yeun’s role in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. Kirkman, discussing his knowledge of the film, seemingly revealed that Yeun is set to play Sentry, a powerful Marvel character making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Thunderbolts, often likened to Marvel’s version of Suicide Squad, is anticipated to bring together a morally ambiguous team, including characters like the new Black Widow, Yelena Belova, and Bucky Barnes.
The longstanding speculation surrounding Yeun’s casting in Thunderbolts gained traction, with reports suggesting he would embody Robert Reynolds, also known as Sentry, a formidable Marvel figure expected to serve as the movie’s antagonist. During a guest appearance on David Finch’s YouTube show, Kirkman unintentionally hinted at Yeun’s role by sharing details of a conversation with the actor:
“[Steven] called me, he went in for a costume fitting…I hope I’m not… I don’t think this is a spoiler, or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe, we’ll see. He told me, ‘Uh, I just came back from a costume fitting for the Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that are yellow and blue.’ He was at the costume fitting and was like ‘Aw crap, I forgot Invincible was yellow and blue!’”
Yeun’s potential portrayal of Sentry in the MCU is generating excitement, with the actor deemed a fitting choice for the role. Known primarily for his role as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead, a key series created by Kirkman, Yeun’s portrayal of Glenn earned him widespread acclaim and showcased the charisma essential for a character as intricate as Sentry.
Despite Yeun’s recognition for The Walking Dead, he is no stranger to the superhero genre. Currently voicing Mark Grayson in Amazon Prime’s animated adaptation of Kirkman’s Invincible, Yeun’s experience with superhero narratives positions him well for the live-action portrayal of Sentry. As of now, neither Yeun nor Marvel Studios has officially commented on Kirkman’s remarks.
The prospect of Sentry joining the MCU adds significant intrigue, and while the confirmation appears implicit, the execution of the character in Thunderbolts and potential future MCU appearances remains to be seen. Fans may anticipate glimpses of Yeun as Sentry through set photos when Thunderbolts commences filming, unless Marvel Studios opts for an official reveal.
